Hi @BillT1952,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

That error message, “Your device ran into a problem and needs to restart”, is a Windows Blue Screen of Death (BSOD). It usually means there’s a critical system error, often caused by:

  • Corrupt drivers or updates
  • Hardware issues (RAM, SSD)
  • System file corruption

Let’s troubleshoot step by step:

1. Note the Stop Code

When the blue screen appears, look for a STOP CODE (e.g., MEMORY_MANAGEMENT, CRITICAL_PROCESS_DIED). This helps pinpoint the cause.
If you missed it, check:

  • Settings → System → About → Advanced system settings → Startup and Recovery → View Event Logs.

2. Boot into Safe Mode

  • Hold Shift while clicking RestartTroubleshoot → Advanced Options → Startup Settings → Restart → Press 4 for Safe Mode.
  • If Safe Mode works, the issue is likely driver or software-related.

3. Update or Roll Back Drivers

  • Open Device Manager → Check for yellow warning icons.
  • Update drivers (especially graphics, chipset, and storage).
  • If the issue started after an update, roll back the driver.

4. Run HP Diagnostics

  • Restart and press F2 repeatedly → HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run Memory Test and Hard Drive Test.

5. Repair Windows System Files

In Safe Mode: sfc /scannow
                          DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

6. Check for Windows Updates

  • Go to Settings → Windows Update and install all pending updates.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
