After doing a “refresh” from recovery manager, now when I turn on the screen, I get the screensaver. I click twice and it goes to another screen which shows a picture of a silhouette with the word “administrator”, there is nowhere to input a password.  If I click on the picture, it says “your account has been disabled.  Please see your system administrator”.  How do I get to an administrator password screen?  Also, I would assume that they’re asking for the original password which I input.

As your computer originally went with the windows 8 according to your product specifications and you've upgraded to the windows 8.1 after purchase, you may use this link to order the recovery media for the windows 8 OS and upgrade later.

Keep me posted and I hope you have a good day ahead,

Welcome to the HP Forums! 🙂

I would like to take a moment and thank you for using this forum, it is a great place to find answers.

As I understand you are unable to access the windows desktop screen and here's what I suggest:

  1. Turn on your computer and repeatedly press the esc key until the Startup Menu opens.

  2. Begin a System Recovery by pressing F11. If prompted, select your keyboard layout.

  3. The Choose an option screen displays. Click Troubleshoot.

Figure : Choose an Option screen with Troubleshoot selected

Troubleshoot selected in the Choose an Option screen
  4. Click Advanced options.

  5. Click Startup Settings. If the Startup Settings option does not display, follow the steps for starting Safe Mode in the Entering Safe Mode without access to Startup Settings section.

  6. Click Restart.

    Figure : Startup Settings screen

Startup Settings screen with Restart button selected

The computer restarts and another Startup Settings screen opens showing a list of different startup options.

  7. Choose the safe mode option you want from the Startup Settings menu:

    • Press the F4 key for Enable Safe Mode. Safe Mode starts Windows with a minimal set of drivers and services

Once you're in, Go to Control Panel (Change to icon view) > Administrative tools > select Computer Management > (on the left pane) Select Local users and groups and then open Users (on the right pane) > double click on Administrators > Uncheck the box - "Account is disabled" > Click Apply and ok.

Restart into normal mode and that should do the trick!

Keep me posted and I hope you have a good day head.

I had to utilize safe mode because there was no startup settings screen.  I entered the information exactly as indicated-  bcdedit/set (default) safe boot minimal and I got the response "an error occurred while attempting to reference the specified entry.  The system cannot find the file specified.

@kia3,

Thank you for replying to my post!

If you have attempted all the steps mentioned in the previous post and it didn't help, I'm afraid this can only be fixed with the reinstallation of windows using the recovery manager program built into your computer by HP.

Here's what you need to do:

Note:

If the recovery partition on the hard disk drive is not functioning correctly, this method does not work and an error message appears. If an error message indicates that System Recovery cannot be run from the startup screen, a set of recovery discs is needed to perform a system recovery. Follow the instructions listed in the section Recovery from recovery discs.

  1. Turn off the computer.

  2. Disconnect all connected devices and cables such as Personal Media Drives, USB drives, printers, and faxes. Remove media from internal drives, and remove any recently added internal hardware. Do not disconnect the monitor, keyboard, mouse, or power cord.

  3. Turn on the computer and repeatedly press the F11 key, about once every second, until Recovery Manager opens.

    Figure : Recovery Manager

    Recovery Manager
  4. Under I need help immediately, click System Recovery.

  5. When System Recovery prompts you to back up your files, select a backup option:

If I turn the machine on, and push F11, the screen comes up to select my keyboard. I choose US.  The next screen says Choose an Option; the only options are:

1 exit and continue to Windows 8

2 Troubleshoot

3 Turn off your PC

I select Troubleshoot, the next screen has Recovery Manager and I choose that. Screen says Choose an Operating System and I select Windows 8, which is the only one available.  When recovery manager opens, my options under I Need Help Immediately Are:

1 Microsoft System Restore

2 Minimize Damage Recovery

I push Minimize Damage Recovery. It successfully partitions the hard drive.  It then begins to reinstall the software.  When I come back, it says restoration incomplete and then I saved the log file on the flash drive, but when I removed the flash drive and put it on my other computer, I don’t see the file..

Thank you for replying,

If the above steps did not resolve this issue, you will need to use the recovery media as mentioned under "Note" on the previous post.

The recovery media would have been created by you shortly after you purchased the computer using either a flash drive or a disc, if you haven't create one, there are two options of obtaining them:

You can either order one online using this link

Or you can contact the HP Phone support and discuss the options with the technician,

HP Technical Support can be reached by clicking on the following link:

http://h22207.www2.hp.com/us-en/?openCLC=true

(1) Once the support page opens please select the country in which you're located. Next, enter your HP model number on the right.

(2) Next, choose the 'Contact Support' tab at the top and scroll down to the bottom of the 'HP Support- Contact' page to fill out the form provided with your contact information.

(3) Once completed click the 'Show Options' icon on the bottom right.

(4) Lastly, scroll down to the bottom of the page and select 'Get phone number.' A case number and phone number will now populate for you.

Well, after all that, HP support says I need to pay for a phone call for support. I don’t know why I would have to pay for support when all I want to do is order recovery disks.  If I have to pay for a phone call and then pay for discs, is it just as easy for me to reformat the drive and buy a copy of Windows 8 or 10?

@kia3

I understand your concern and as I mentioned before if you don't wish to pay for the phone call, you could also order the recovery discs online using the Official HP website.

Let me know, how that goes!

I went to the website but it says there are no recovery discs available for the Envy dv7 7323cl.  Can you tell me if I am searching in the wrong place?
