Two issues:
1) Sporadically, I will save a document only to learn the document was not saving. This has happened a few times over about six months. I finally figured out how to retrieve an auto-save version.
2) Today however, when I went to the specified autosave file location, it doesn't appear to be autosaving like it is supposed to. Atleast the file location does not include a Word document that I have been working on for over 24 hours. This should have been captured into the autosave file location at some point during that time, but it is not there.

This is likely something going on in Word, the setups in Word and how they are responding, or perhaps even something within the particular document.
For example,
- The folder / file destination for "auto save" may or may not be working as expected.
- Auto-Save may need to be switched off temporarily, the locations checked, and the (Auto-Save) restarted
- If you are using OneDrive, that location needs to be checked
- Temporary "save" files that are not current (for open documents) may need to be removed
One of the better sources for Office Word I've found over the years is the following:
For example, for this type of issue:
You should also check with Microsoft Office Support
There is an outside (unlikely) chance that the issue is related to your Windows Updates and / or your Windows File System.
For example, if you have managed to migrate to Windows SDK 2004 (build 19041.xx), your version of Word (if it is older) may be glitching. What to do? Unsure - at this writing, so soon after its releast, Windows 2004 is still kind of a mess.
That said, in my opinion, you need to first eliminate what is happening - or not happening - in Office Word and your document before you make changes elsewhere in the Operating System.
