Hi, I have a 3 year old HP 15-ef2xxx. It makes an annoying chime, (beep-boop!) when it goes into sleep mode. The chime is random, it might happen every 10 seconds, then it's quiet for a minute or two, then it beeps again. Any ideas? I've read where this can be a bios issue and I tried finding a bios update but HP says none is available for this model.

Hi @jmorton444,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

It sounds like your HP 15-ef2xxx laptop is producing a random "beep-boop" sound when it goes into sleep mode. While you've already checked for a BIOS update and found none available, there are still several potential causes and fixes you can explore:

1. Disable System Sounds in Windows

Since the sound seems to be related to sleep mode, disabling or adjusting system sounds might prevent the chime from playing.

  • Right-click the Speaker icon in the system tray and select Sounds.
  • In the Sounds tab, scroll down and look for events like Device Connect, Device Disconnect, or Sleep.
  • Set these events to (None) in the drop-down menu.
  • Click Apply and OK.

2. Check for Power Management Settings

  • Sometimes, power management features can cause such sounds, especially related to USB devices or power-saving features.
  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options.
  • Click on Change plan settings next to your current plan.
  • Choose Change advanced power settings.
  • In the Power Options window, expand Sleep and USB settings, and set them to Disabled or configure them to avoid unnecessary notifications.

3. Check for Connected USB Devices

  • The beeping could be caused by USB devices repeatedly connecting and disconnecting as the system enters sleep mode.
  • Unplug any external USB devices (including USB hubs, mice, and keyboards) and see if the sound persists.
  • You can also check Device Manager for any problematic USB devices:
    • Press Windows + X and select Device Manager.
    • Expand Universal Serial Bus Controllers and check for any devices that might be malfunctioning or have exclamation marks. Right-click and select Uninstall for any suspicious devices, then restart the system.

4. Update Drivers (Especially Chipset & Audio)

  • Ensure your chipset and audio drivers are fully updated, as older drivers might have conflicts that trigger system sounds.
  • Visit the HP Support page for your specific model (HP 15-ef2xxx) and download the latest chipset and audio drivers.
  • If using Realtek Audio, open the Realtek Audio Console and look for any notification or sound event settings that may need adjustment.

Hi @jmorton444 ,

Please find the remaining steps below.

5. Disable Windows Notifications Sounds

  • Sometimes the chime could be triggered by system notifications or alerts.
  • Go to Settings > System > Notifications & actions.
  • Turn off Get notifications from apps and other senders, or at least ensure sound notifications are disabled.

6. Run the HP Hardware Diagnostics Tool

  • HP laptops come with a built-in diagnostics tool that can check for hardware issues.
  • Restart the laptop and press F2 repeatedly to enter HP Diagnostics.
  • Run the hardware tests to check if any issues are detected with the system components, particularly power and audio.

7. Check for Battery or Power Issues

  • If the sound is related to power, your battery or power adapter might be causing intermittent power connections.
  • Disconnect the power adapter and test whether the sound still occurs when the laptop is running on battery alone.
  • Also, check if the issue persists when you remove the battery (if possible) and run the laptop on AC power only.

8. Check BIOS Settings

  • Although there’s no BIOS update available, check your existing BIOS settings to see if there are any power management options or alerts that might be enabled.
  • Restart your laptop and press Esc or F10 to enter the BIOS/UEFI settings.
  • Look through the Power Management or System Alerts sections for anything related to sleep mode or system sounds, and disable them if possible.

9. Disable the Sleep Mode Beep via the Registry (Optional)

  • If none of the above steps work, you can try disabling the sound through a registry edit. This is an advanced step, so proceed with caution:

10. System Restore (Optional)

  • If the problem started recently, consider using System Restore to revert the system to a point when the issue did not exist:
    • Press Windows + R, type rstrui, and press Enter. Follow the prompts to restore the system to an earlier state.

If the issue continues after trying these steps, it could be a hardware-specific issue that requires service.

Keep me posted for further assistance
