HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer

I have an OfficeJet Pro 6978 and printing in black stopped working. I bought two cartridge just in case, with the first the pages would come out in a faded greyish color and with the second one the pages would come out blank.

I've tried

1.cleaning the cartridges and around the area in case dry ink was blocking the ink from going through

2.soaking them in water in case the ink was dried up

3. resetting the printer

4. turning it off and on

5. Making sure the cartridges is the appropriate for the printer, I even got the notification stating " Original cartridges have been successfully installed"

I'm not sure what else I could do, this problem only occurred once I had ran out of ink and had to install a new cartridge.

ALL suggestions are welcomed!

Hi @HElp2901,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like you've done a thorough job of troubleshooting your HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 printer. Here are some additional steps you can try to resolve the black ink printing issue:

1. Check Printhead for Blockages

  • Open the printer and remove the ink cartridges.
  • Remove the printhead if your printer design allows it (refer to the printer's manual for instructions).
  • Use a lint-free cloth or paper towel lightly moistened with warm water to gently clean the printhead nozzles and contacts.
  • Let the printhead dry completely before reinstallation.

2. Run Printer Diagnostic and Cleaning Tools

  • Go to the printer's control panel.
  • Navigate to Settings or Tools.
  • Select Printhead Cleaning or Ink System Maintenance and follow the on-screen instructions.
  • Follow the same menu path and select Printhead Alignment to ensure the printhead is properly aligned.

3. Check Ink Cartridge Status

  • Make sure the protective tape or plastic is completely removed from the cartridge.
  • Confirm that the cartridge is properly seated in the slot.
  • If you have another new black ink cartridge, try installing it to see if it resolves the issue.

4. Update Printer Firmware

  • Check for Firmware Updates:
    • Visit the HP Support website and search for your printer model.
    • Download and install any available firmware updates.

5. Check for Software Issues

Sometimes the issue might be related to the software:

Reinstall Printer Drivers:

  • Uninstall the current printer drivers from your computer.Download the latest drivers from the HP website and reinstall them.

Check Printer Settings:

  • Ensure that the print settings are configured to print in black and not set to print in grayscale or color-only mode.

6. Perform a Printer Reset

If the above steps do not work, a more thorough reset might help:

  • Factory Reset the Printer:
    • Go to Settings or Setup on the printer's control panel.
    • Look for the option to Restore Factory Settings or Reset Printer and follow the prompts.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
