My HP Envy x3600 Laptop Ultra 7 intel core, is not increasing or decreasing the screen's brightness. It will sometimes automatically get super dark, making it hard to see. Sometimes it will go brighter, and even putting the brightness down it wouldn't go down.

Hi @vb201,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

The issue you're experiencing with your HP Envy x360 laptop's brightness control can often be due to software or driver problems. Below are several steps you can follow to troubleshoot and fix this issue:

1. Update the Display Drivers:

  • Go to Device Manager by right-clicking the Start button and selecting it from the list.
  • Expand Display adapters, right-click on your display adapter (likely Intel or NVIDIA), and select Update driver.
  • Choose Search automatically for updated driver software. If there’s an update, install it and restart your laptop.
  • Alternatively, you can download the latest drivers directly from the manufacturer's website (Intel, NVIDIA, or AMD).

2. Check Power and Sleep Settings:

  • Go to Settings > System > Power & sleep.
  • Click on Additional power settings.
  • Choose your current power plan and click on Change plan settings.
  • Click Change advanced power settings and look for Display settings. Ensure that brightness settings under both On battery and Plugged in are set correctly.

3. Disable Adaptive Brightness:

  • Adaptive brightness can sometimes cause the screen brightness to fluctuate automatically.
  • Go to Settings > System > Display and check if there’s an option for Change brightness automatically when lighting changes. If it’s on, try turning it off.
  • Alternatively, in Control Panel, go to Hardware and Sound > Power Options > Change plan settings > Change advanced power settings. Under Display, look for Enable adaptive brightness and turn it off for both On battery and Plugged in.

4. Update BIOS and Chipset Drivers:

  • Sometimes the BIOS or chipset drivers can affect screen brightness functionality.
  • Visit the HP support website and download the latest BIOS and chipset drivers specific to your laptop model.
  • Install the updates carefully following HP's instructions, as BIOS updates should be performed with caution.

Please find the remaining steps in the next post.

Hi @vb201 ,

Please find the remainings steps below.

5. Adjust Brightness via Graphics Control Panel:

  • For Intel Graphics: Right-click on the desktop and select Intel Graphics Settings or Graphics Properties. Adjust the brightness from there.
  • For NVIDIA: Right-click on the desktop, select NVIDIA Control Panel, then adjust brightness under Display > Adjust desktop color settings.
  • For AMD: Right-click on the desktop, select AMD Radeon Settings, then adjust brightness.

6. Reset the Power Settings:

  • In Control Panel > Power Options, click on Restore default settings for this plan. This will reset the brightness and power settings to default, which might help resolve the issue.

7. Check Windows Update:

  • Go to Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and check if there are any updates available, especially those related to drivers or the operating system itself, which might fix the brightness issue.

8. Perform a System Restore:

  • If the brightness issue started recently, a system restore might help.
  • Go to Control Panel > System and Security > System > System Protection, click on System Restore, and follow the prompts to restore your system to a previous working state.

9. Check for Malware:

  • Sometimes malware can affect system functionalities like display settings. Running a full system scan with Windows Defender or your preferred antivirus software can help identify and remove potential threats.

If these steps do not resolve the issue, there might be a hardware issue with the brightness sensor or display, and it could be necessary to contact HP phone support for further assistance.
