I have an HP Pavilion laptop that won’t start up correctly. The battery is charged, and I have also tried with the power adapter connected.

When I press the power button, the power light turns on for about 5 seconds, then turns off. After that, the light comes back on for a few seconds and then goes off again. The laptop never actually starts, and the screen remains black. There are no beeps or fan noises.

I already tried a hard reset (holding the power button for 60 seconds with no power connected) and also attempted the BIOS recovery with Win + B and Win + V, but nothing happens.

@Piera3, Hello and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

I understand your HP Pavilion laptop isn’t powering on properly despite a charged battery and connected adapter. Since you've already tried a hard reset and BIOS recovery (Win + B / Win + V), here are a few more steps to help isolate and potentially resolve the issue:

Check for Signs of Life

  • Disconnect all external devices (USB drives, printers, etc.).
  • Plug in only the AC adapter (remove battery if removable).
  • Press the power button and observe:
    • Does the power LED blink in a pattern?
    • Any keyboard backlight or fan noise?

If there’s no activity beyond the brief LED flash, proceed to next steps.

Perform a CMOS Reset (RTC Battery Reset)

Some HP laptops have a pinhole or button for resetting the embedded controller:

  • Look for a pin-sized hole labeled "CMOS" or "Reset" on the bottom.
  • Use a paperclip to press and hold for 10–15 seconds.
  • If not available, disconnect the main battery (if removable) and hold the power button for 60 seconds again.

Try External Display

  • Connect the laptop to an external monitor via HDMI.
  • Power on and press F4 or Fn + F4 to switch displays.
  • This checks if the issue is with the internal display.

BIOS Crisis Recovery (Advanced)

If Win + B or Win + V didn’t work:

  • Try holding Windows + B, then press and hold the power button for 2–3 seconds, then release all keys.
  • Wait up to 40 seconds to see if BIOS recovery screen appears.

Reseat RAM and SSD (if accessible)

If you're comfortable opening the back panel:

  • Remove and reseat the RAM modules and SSD/HDD.
  • Sometimes loose connections can prevent POST.

If none of the above work, the issue may be:

  • Faulty motherboard, power IC, or BIOS chip. In this case, service may be required. We suggest you please visit the nearest HP authorized service center, the service team will check and assist you.
Kindly follow this link to locate the nearest HP service center: Ricerca centro assistenza HP® - Italia | Supporto HP®
