I was using my laptop normally. My Envy laptop was not connected to the charger. My laptop went off automatically when the battery was completely discharged. Since then it has not been restarting.  (this happened to me before a few months ago but then after charging the computer overnight the computer restarted) I charged the battery and the battery charged normally. I also opened the back and checked the tension of the battery which was 12.6 V which seems to be normal and fully charged. The laptop is 4 1/2 years old. I took my laptop to my local IT support shop but they were unable to help. What could be the cause of this problem? Is it possible that the motherboard has completely failed or could it be a minor component? Is it worth it to ship it to HP for a quotation for repair?

Hi @FRAM777,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Sorry for the inconvenience caused don’t worry let me help you.

To better understand the issue, could you please provide a few more details?

  1. When you press the power button, do any LEDs, fan noises, or screen activity occur at all?
  2. Have you tried powering the laptop with the battery removed, using only the AC adapter?
  3. Do you notice any beeps or blinking lights during attempted startup?
  4. Has the laptop ever shown signs of overheating, liquid damage, or physical impact?
  5. Does the laptop show up at all when connecting it to a computer via USB, or in BIOS/firmware recovery mode if attempted?

Troubleshooting steps to try

  1. Perform a hard reset
    • Disconnect the charger
    • Hold the power button for 30–60 seconds
    • Reconnect battery and charger and try powering on
  2. Test with AC power only
    • If possible, remove the battery and plug in the charger directly
    • This will determine whether the battery or charging circuitry is the problem
  3. Check the power button and connectors
    • Sometimes the power button or internal connector can fail due to wear or dust
    • Make sure the connection between the power button and motherboard is secure
  4. Reseat RAM and storage
    • On older laptops, loose RAM or SSD connections can prevent startup
    • Remove and carefully reseat memory sticks and SSD/HDD
  5. Observe LEDs or diagnostic indicators
    • HP laptops often blink LED codes or beep codes that indicate motherboard, CPU, or power issues
    • Note any patterns as this can help determine the component causing the failure

I hope this helps.

I have tried all the above but the computer is completely dead!

The battery is at 12.5V and seems charging fine.

The last thing I need to investigate is the power bottom since the nearby plastic of the hinges was slightly broken and perhaps some debris went in the switch? although seems fine even when pressing down holding the motherboard that I have not removed yet to see the back of the switch.

How can I send this laptop to HP for a repair?
