Hi @mdp_341

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The "Thermal Shutdown" error you’re encountering on your HP Notebook 15-ay542tu indicates that your laptop is automatically shutting down to protect itself from overheating. This happens when the system detects that the internal temperatures are too high, possibly due to issues with the cooling system, dust buildup, or system settings. Let’s go through the steps to help you resolve this problem.

1. Clean the Cooling System (Fan & Vents)

The most common cause of overheating is dust buildup in the cooling system. If the cooling fan is blocked or the airflow is restricted, the laptop will overheat quickly.

  • Turn off your laptop and unplug it from any power source.
  • Remove the battery if possible.
  • Use a can of compressed air to blow out dust from the cooling vents and fan area. Make sure you do this gently to avoid damaging internal components. Blow air into both the intake and exhaust vents.
  • If you're comfortable doing so, you can remove the back panel of the laptop and clean the fans more thoroughly with a soft brush or compressed air. Be careful not to touch any internal components.

If you don’t feel comfortable opening the laptop, using compressed air through the cooling vents is still effective.

2. Check if the Fan is Working

If the fan isn’t spinning properly, it will not be able to cool the system efficiently, leading to overheating.

  • Turn on the laptop and place your hand near the cooling vents (usually located on the side or bottom of the laptop).
  • Check if you feel airflow from the fan. If you don’t feel any air or hear the fan spinning, then the fan might be faulty.
  • If the fan is not working or making unusual noises (like grinding or rattling), you might need to replace it. Contact HP Support or a professional technician for a replacement fan.

3. Update BIOS

Outdated BIOS versions can sometimes cause thermal management issues. If your BIOS is outdated, updating it could resolve the overheating problem by improving how your system handles power and cooling.

  1. Go to the HP Support website:
    • Visit the HP Support page, enter your laptop model (HP 15-ay542tu), and check for any available BIOS updates.
  2. Install the Latest BIOS Update:
    • If an update is available, follow the instructions on the website to download and install the BIOS update.
    • BIOS updates sometimes include better thermal management settings, which could help prevent the thermal shutdown issue.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
