Upon booting when you get prompt to hit "Ctrl"  "Alt" "Del" there is no response. This happens randomly. If you reboot 2-3 times

(hard boot) you will get a login prompt and can log in.

I ran Hp Diags and that found no problems.

System is Windows 10 pro, 16gb ram 1TB hd

Hello;

Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!

The use of Ctrl-Alt-Del has changed over the years.  It no longer reboots your PC; instead, all it does is launch Task Manager.

I see you're running Win10. Did the PC come preinstalled with Win10? Or, did you upgrade it from a prior OS to Win10?

So, what is the problem with the PC?

We can proceed when you provide the answers.

HI and Thank you,

The HP laptop came with Windows 10 pro installed.

When you power up the laptop it will go to a background with the time displayed.  At that point I would hit ctrl alt del and be presented with a username and password prompt. I would enter that and get to the desktop.

What is happening is that I get to the background and hit Ctrl Alt Del and nothing happens.  I have found that once in a while if I hit ctrl alt del it will go to the username\password prompt. most of the time nothing happens when I hit that combination and sometimes if I turn the laptop off and wait 20 min I may be able to log in.

I am trying to figure out if this is a Windows 10 problem or a hard disk problem and what I can do to correct it.

From your description, it sounds like there's something wrong with the Win10 setup.

When I boot my PC, I get the wallpaper, I press any key and I get the prompt to enter my password.  You should be doing this the same way.  You should not have to enter Ctrl-Alt-Del as that launches the Task Manager, which you do not need to do to login to Win10.

You paid for free HP Tech Support as part of the warranty coverage, so you might as well make use of it.

While this PC is still under warranty, you should contact HP Customer Support directly to have them put you in touch with HP Technical Support to see what they can do about troubleshooting and repairing your machine remotely.

I did this recently and the HP Tech was able to remotely access my PC from the Internet and do the needed repairs.

Hi,

The reason CTRL ALT  DEL  is present is because the laptop is logging into a corporate network.  Our netwok is configured to accept this combination of keys and nothing else.

We do have other Windows 10 laptops that have had no problem logging in . It is only this one that won't always take the ctrl , alt, del .

I did check the warranty and itis out of warranty. I will however, attempt contacting Hp Tech support and see if they will remote into my laptop.

I would like to leave this open in case someone has had this issue and found a fix for it.

That's unfortunate -- and my advice is to sit with your IT folks and have them work with you to resolve the PC problem.

When I worked at home for a major corporation, they issued me an HP laptop and it was configured to do much the same -- require a special key combination to load into their Domain.

They kept the details a carefully guarded secret and would not share any of the details with me -- even though I have been a System Administrator, myself.

So, you might have to turn the laptop over to them to have them get it working properly.

Good Luck
