I'm helping daughter-in-law who is deaf. She has a new hp laptop and we are trying to get it set up. But everything she downloads, every document, all iCloud files, etc., go to the C:/ drive. We found the system setting where that can be changed. However, the drop-downs do not work, so cannot change the locations. We click and nothing happens, whether using the built in mouse pad or a connected mouse. What can we do to get the menu to display?

Please help.

- When was the last time it was working fine?

- Were there any changes made to your laptop recently?

Thank you for reply. To answer your four questions in order you asked them.

1. Product ID 8R3M1UA#ABA

2. No error messages.

3. There is no last time it was working fine. Did not work right out of the box.

4. No changes except just the normal setting up of a new computer.

Restored files from iCloud and they all went to the C:/ drive automatically, no choice as to where to save them. Checked settings and found where to change this, but it cannot be changed. The drop-down box does not open.

This should not be happening in a brand new computer.

Please help.

Thank you.

Sandra

Hi @MizFrog,

Thank you for sharing the above information.

Please follow the below steps to fix the issue.

A) Perform a power drain on your PC.

1) Unplug the power cord from the PC & wall.

2) Disconnect the power cable from the AC adapter if it is a detachable part and keep it aside.

3) Press and hold the power button down for 15 seconds and release the power button, wait for about 30 seconds.

4) Plug the power cord back into the AC adapter, then connect it to the wall and to the charging port on your PC.

5) Power on the PC and check if it boots into Windows now.

B) Update the BIOS for your PC by clicking on the link.

Make sure you keep only the charger plugged in while updating the BIOS for your PC.

Click on the + sign next to BIOS and then download the file.

Open the file and follow the on-screen instructions to complete the update.

C) Install all the pending updates for the Windows operating system following the below steps.

Go to Start > Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update and select Check for updates. If the upgrade is available for your device and you want to proceed, download and install it.

D) If the issue still persists, click on this link to perform a recovery on your Laptop.  (Take a backup of the data before performing a recovery)

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

Hi @MizFrog,

I am sorry to hear that the above steps did not help much but i do appreciate your efforts in performing the troubleshooting steps.

As you are not able to open the drop-down menu and select a different location for your iCloud files. Here are a few steps to resolve the issue:

1. Check iCloud Drive Settings

  • Open the iCloud app on your computer.
  • Ensure iCloud Drive is enabled.
  • Look for the option to Change the Folder Location:
    • If the drop-down is unresponsive, it might be due to software conflicts.

2. Run as Administrator

  • Close iCloud.
  • Right-click the iCloud icon and select Run as Administrator.
  • Check if the drop-down menu now works.

3. Update iCloud for Windows

  • Open the Microsoft Store or Apple's website and check for updates to iCloud for Windows.
  • Download and install any available updates.

4. Repair iCloud Installation

  1. Go to Control Panel > Programs > Programs and Features.
  2. Locate iCloud in the list.
  3. Select it, then click Repair.
  4. After the repair process, restart your computer and test again.

5. Use an Alternate Method to Change the Save Location

  • If the drop-down menu remains unresponsive, you can try manually setting a different location:
    1. Open File Explorer.
    2. Right-click iCloud Drive in the navigation pane.
    3. Select Properties.
    4. Look for options to change the save location.

Please mark this post as “Accepted Solution” if the issue is resolved and if you feel this reply was helpful click “Yes”.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a great day ahead!
