my kindle wants me to keep it plugged into a usb port but eject it from the computer. How do I do that?

It might vary a bit by Windows version. Do you have 7, 8, 8.1, 10? But generally go to the lower right corner to the toobar and there should be an icon there that shows connected devices. If you hover the pointer over the icon it says "safely remove" or something like that depending on Windows version. 

 

Right Click on it and it shows the devices and gives the chance to eject.
