Hi @chuckhall1,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Error code 0x80096004 typically indicates an issue related to Windows Update. It may occur when there's a problem with downloading or installing updates on your system. Here are some general steps you can try to resolve this error.
Check your Internet Connection: Ensure that your internet connection is stable and capable of downloading updates. A weak or intermittent connection can cause update failures.
Run Windows Update Troubleshooter: Windows has a built-in troubleshooter that can help identify and resolve issues with Windows Update. Here's how you can run it:
- Press Windows key + I to open the Settings menu.
- Go to "Update & Security" and then click on "Troubleshoot" in the left sidebar.
- Select "Windows Update" and follow the on-screen instructions to run the troubleshooter.
Check Date and Time Settings: Ensure that your system's date and time settings are accurate. Incorrect date and time settings can sometimes interfere with the update process.
Clear Windows Update Cache: The Windows Update cache may be corrupted, causing issues with updates. You can try clearing the Windows Update cache by following these steps:
Open a Command Prompt as an administrator. Right-click on the Start button, select "Command Prompt (Admin)."
Type the following commands and press Enter after each:
net stop wuauserv
net stop cryptSvc
net stop bits
net stop msiserver ren C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution SoftwareDistribution.old ren C:\Windows\System32\catroot2 catroot2.old
net start wuauserv
net start cryptSvc net start bits
net start msiserver
Close the Command Prompt and try running Windows Update again.
Perform a Clean Boot: Sometimes, third-party applications or services can interfere with the update process. Performing a clean boot can help identify if this is the case. Here's how:
- Press Windows key + R to open the Run dialog, type msconfig, and press Enter.
- In the System Configuration window, go to the "Services" tab, check the "Hide all Microsoft services" box, and then click "Disable all."
- Go to the "Startup" tab and click "Open Task Manager." Disable all startup items.
- Close the Task Manager and click "OK" in the System Configuration window.
- Restart your computer and try running Windows Update again.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
