Pavillon Gaming Laptop
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi all, after a win10 update my laptop gets stuck after the booting logo with no video.

After the booting sequence (win10 spinning circles and HP logo) the screen turns black.

it is not dead black however, it seems the pc booted in some way and it is most probably stuck in the login screen. I can see the hdd led randomly flashing as well.

I've tried to enter in recovery mode during reboot but I get the error code 0xc0000225.

I then tried to repair my win10 installation by using the win10 media creation tool and booting from a USB key,

As I boot from USB I'm prompted with the choice in the attached picture.20210318_174305.jpg

if I remove the USB key and click on yes, the laptop reboots and I'm stuck again to the previous black screen.

I'm not sure if I can repair and preserve my data if I click on No... any advice?

Thanks a lot!

Giuseppe

A clean install will erase everything on your drive, so if you need to retain your data, this is not the thing to do.

If a Windows Update failed, that leaves the PC in a corrupted state.  Microsoft then tried to recover from that, but that failed, so it's trying over and over again -- and will never succeed because Windows Update got corrupted in the process. Unfortunately, this is NOT a new issue with Win10 Windows Updates.

This problem is very difficult, if not impossible to fix -- from the standpoint of making repairs and leaving your stuff intact. Some steps for trying this are listed below, but they are very hard to do and if they do not work, you are faced with doing a complete Windows reinstallation to get your PC back working again.

So, if it were me, I would focus on data recovery for now and deal with getting the laptop working later.

If your PC can not boot into Windows, a way around that is to follow the instructions below to create boot media from Macrium Reflect (MR) that can be used to boot your PC even if the hard drive is not working:
1) Download and install Macrium Reflect (MR) from this link: http://www.macrium.com/reflectfree.aspx
2) Use the option to create a boot USB stick or CD

That will create MR bootable media. Then, you can boot your PC into WinPE using that media.

Have patience, as that can take a while to start and bring up the screen.

Once the screen is there, read this thread about using PE Explorer -- a simple file explorer: https://forum.macrium.com/PrintTopic15803.aspx

If your disk still works, you might be then able to retrieve some files and folders from it.

Good Luck
