Hi @rach231969,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP device is displaying a "fan not working" error message, it indicates that the system has detected an issue with the cooling fan, which is crucial for preventing overheating. Here are steps to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:
1. Check for Obstructions
- Inspect Vents: Ensure that the air vents are not blocked by dust, debris, or any physical obstructions. Clean the vents using compressed air.
- Check Fan Movement: If possible, visually inspect the fan to see if it is spinning freely without any obstructions.
2. Update BIOS and Drivers
- BIOS Update: Sometimes, a BIOS update can resolve hardware-related isues. Visit the HP support website to download and install the latest BIOS version for your model.
- Driver Update: Ensure all system drivers, particularly the chipset and thermal drivers, are up to date.
3. Perform a Hard Reset
- Turn off the computer.
- Disconnect all external devices and unplug the power cord.
- Press and hold the power button for 15-20 seconds.
- Reconnect the power cord and power on the device.
4. Check Fan Settings in BIOS
- Restart your computer and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings (usually by pressing F10, F2, Del, or Esc during startup).
- Look for hardware monitoring or fan settings and ensure that the fan is enabled and set to default or automatic settings.
5. Run HP Hardware Diagnostics
- Turn off the computer.
- Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly until the Startup menu appears.
- Press F2 to open the HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
- Run the System Test and select the fan to see if it identifies any specific issues.
6. Check Power Supply
- Ensure that your power supply is functioning correctly. A faulty power supply can sometimes lead to issues with the fan.
7. Inspect the Fan Connection
- Internal Inspection: If you're comfortable opening your laptop or desktop, you can check if the fan is properly connected to the motherboard. Ensure all connections are secure.
- Replacement: If the fan is damaged or not functioning, you may need to replace it. Consider seeking professional help if you're not experienced with hardware repairs
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
