how do i set the D drive as the default storage drive for documents and music?

Your D partition should be the recovery partition used to reinstall Windows if needed. If you have made your Recovery Media using HP Recovery Manager in Start menu you could format the partition and use it for storage. You can change where content is saved using Settings>System.

That really doesn’t help since the C drive is 118gb (and only has 36.1 gb free) and the d drive is 931 gb

Did you try going to Settings> System >Storage (in left sidebar) and select Change where new content is saved?

Also in Settings>Apps you may be able to move some to D. Click each to see which offers moving.
