Hi @OD9 ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

That error, 0xC000000F on your HP Slimline PC, is one of the most frustrating things to see. In plain language, it means your computer has lost the map it needs to find and start Windows.

It's essentially saying: "I know I'm supposed to load Windows, but I can't find the necessary file (the Boot Configuration Data, or BCD) that tells me where Windows is located."

The most common causes are:

  1. Corrupted Boot Files (BCD): The file that lists the operating systems is damaged.

  2. Hard Drive Failure (Physical): Your hard drive is starting to fail, and the critical boot data is on a bad sector.

  3. Physical Connection Issue: The cable connecting the hard drive might be loose or faulty (less common in a Slimline that hasn't been moved, but possible).

Few steps you can try below mentioned:

Step 1: The Basic Hardware Check

Before assuming a software disaster, let's try the simplest things first:

  1. Unplug Everything External: Disconnect all USB devices, printers, external hard drives, etc. Only leave the monitor, keyboard, and mouse connected. Sometimes a faulty external device interferes with the boot process.

  2. Power Cycle (The Hard Reset):

    • Turn the computer OFF.

    • Unplug the power cord from the back of the PC and the wall outlet.

    • Hold down the power button on the PC for about 15-20 seconds to drain any residual power.

    • Plug the power cord back in and turn the PC on.

If it still hits the same error, move to Step 2.

Step 2: Use the HP/Windows Recovery Environment

You need to get the PC into a repair mode to fix the "lost map." On many HP PCs, you can access the built-in repair tools this way:

  1. Turn on your PC and immediately start tapping the F11 key repeatedly (or the Esc key, then F9 or F11 until you see an HP or Windows recovery screen.

  2. Once you get to a "Choose an option" screen:

    • Select Troubleshoot.

    • Select Advanced options.

    • Select Startup Repair.

The PC will try to automatically fix the corrupted boot files. This works a surprising amount of the time. If it succeeds, the PC will reboot into Windows.

Step 3: Run Command Line Fixes (If Startup Repair Fails)

If Startup Repair fails, you have to manually rebuild the boot map. You still need to get to the Advanced options screen from Step 2.

  1. From the Advanced options screen, choose Command Prompt.

  2. When the black command window opens, type the following commands, pressing Enter after each one:

    • bootrec /fixmbr (This fixes the main start of the drive)

    • bootrec /fixboot (This writes a new boot sector)

    • bootrec /rebuildbcd (This finds and re-adds your Windows installation to the boot map)

  3. After the commands are complete, type exit and press Enter, then choose to Continue (reboot).

If none of these software fixes work, there is a very high chance that the hard drive itself is physically failing. At that point, the next step would be to try to run the HP hardware diagnostics (usually by pressing F2 or Esc on boot) to confirm a hard drive failure, which would require replacing the hard drive.

Hope this helps resolve your issue
