I recently started using this laptop again and I can't find a way to disengage the touchpad on it.  Can someone help me with this?  She's old but the keyboard is a dream to type on.  Thank You

Hi @jannie48

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how distracting it feels when the touchpad gets in the way while you type. Let’s go through the different ways you can turn it off — you can use whichever works best for your laptop’s age and model.

1. Look for a function key shortcut

On many laptops, there’s a key combination that toggles the touchpad:

Look along the top row of your keyboard (F1–F12) for an icon that looks like a touchpad or a finger pointing.

If you see it, press Fn + that key (for example, Fn + F6 or Fn + F9 depending on the brand).

2. Use the touchpad on/off button or area

Some older laptops hide the control right on the touchpad itself:

Try double-tapping the upper-left corner of the touchpad.

On some models, a small light will appear indicating it’s disabled.

3. Turn it off in Windows settings

Press Windows key + I to open Settings.

Go to Devices > Touchpad (on Windows 10) or Bluetooth & devices > Touchpad (on Windows 11).

Switch the touchpad toggle Off.

4. Disable it through Device Manager

Right-click the Start menu and choose Device Manager.

Expand Mice and other pointing devices.

Right-click the touchpad (it may show as Synaptics, ELAN, or HID-compliant touchpad) and choose Disable device.

Would you like me to give you steps tailored to your specific laptop model? If you share the brand and model number, I can pinpoint the exact function key or method.

Hello, Thanks for helping me figure out why I can't disable this touchpad. The first place I went was to the device manager and disabled it (Elan). The next place was settings, no help there either. My model is 2KW15UA#ABA.

Thanks for your help!!  I hope the model # helps solve this problem. Jannie48
