HP ENVY Notebook - 15-ah150na (ENERGY STAR)
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi I have an old hp envy and it went belly-up on me recently, could not find any way to get it to boot so tried reinstalling win 10 (several times) but the install never finishes, after appearing to install everything it just shows hp logo with rotating dots under it endlessly.

So tried other OS, various flavours of linux and can get the live versions to work but non of them will install but give no reason, sometimes get messages about commands using root but they never seem to work and the linux gparted app appears to indicate the hard drive is OK.

So wondered if anyone might have ideas.

Hi @fedupwithenteri,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding boot issues!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

Try these steps:

Check Hardware Connections: Ensure that all hardware components, such as RAM, hard drive, and cables, are securely connected. Sometimes loose connections can cause boot and installation issues.

Reset BIOS/UEFI: Enter your laptop's BIOS/UEFI settings by pressing the appropriate key (usually F10, Esc, or Del) upon startup. Try resetting the settings to default and check your boot sequence to ensure it attempts to boot from the correct drive.

Test Hard Drive: It might be worth testing the hard drive for any errors. You can use diagnostic tools like CHKDSK on Windows or similar Linux utilities to see if the drive is failing. If it's failing, you may need to replace it.

Create a New Installation Media: Problems might occur due to corrupt installation media. Redownload the OS installation files and create a new bootable USB or DVD using tools like Rufus for Windows or UNetbootin for Linux.

Check for BIOS Updates: Updating the BIOS might resolve compatibility issues. You can find BIOS updates on HP's support page.

Disable Secure Boot and Fast Boot: Sometimes, disabling Secure Boot and Fast Boot in the BIOS/UEFI can help resolve issues with OS installation.

Error Messages: Make a note of any error messages you see. If you're getting messages about "commands using ro," this might relate to read-only file system permission issues in Linux, which can be resolved by ensuring your installation media and destination drive have proper permissions.

I hope this helps.

Thanks for all the info and suggestions, it may take me a while to work through that lot as it sounds like I need to get into it and I am not too familiar with hardware stuff.
