Hi @ultra2010,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
A black screen on startup can be caused by various issues, ranging from hardware problems to software glitches. Here are some steps you can try to troubleshoot the issue.
- Hard Reset: Sometimes, a hard reset can resolve startup issues. Disconnect all external devices (like USB drives, printers, etc.), remove the battery if possible, unplug the power adapter, and hold down the power button for about 15-20 seconds. Then, reconnect the power adapter (and battery if removed) and try turning on the laptop again.
- Check Display Connections: Ensure that the display cable is properly connected to both the laptop and the monitor. If you're using an external monitor, try connecting it to another device to make sure it's functioning properly.
- Brightness Settings: Sometimes, the screen brightness might be set too low, making it appear black. Try increasing the brightness by pressing the appropriate keys on the keyboard.
- BIOS Reset: Resetting the BIOS settings to default can sometimes resolve startup issues. You can usually access the BIOS setup utility by pressing a specific key (like F2 or Del) during startup. Once in the BIOS, look for an option to reset to default settings.
- Boot into Safe Mode: If the laptop boots into Safe Mode (usually by repeatedly pressing F8 or Shift + F8 during startup), it could indicate a software issue. From Safe Mode, you can troubleshoot and potentially fix any software-related problems.
- Check for Faulty Hardware: If none of the above steps work, it's possible that there's a hardware problem such as a faulty display, graphics card, or motherboard.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
