Hi @jdilly023
Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for posting your query! We're here to help you get back up and running.
If your HP laptop is experiencing bootup issues and you're unable to download system updates due to expired software, here are steps you can take to resolve these issues:
1. Perform a Hard Reset
A hard reset can help resolve many bootup issues:
- Turn off your laptop.
- Disconnect all external devices (e.g., printers, USB drives).
- Unplug the AC adapter from the laptop.
- If your laptop has a removable battery, remove it. If not, you can skip this step.
- Press and hold the power button for about 15 seconds to discharge residual power.
- Reconnect the AC adapter (and the battery if you removed it), then power on the laptop.
2. Boot into Safe Mode
Booting into Safe Mode can help fix issues with Windows Updates:
- Turn off your laptop.
- Turn it on and immediately press F8 repeatedly until you see the Advanced Boot Options menu.
- Select Safe Mode and press Enter.
- Once in Safe Mode, try to run Windows Update again.
3. Run HP PC Hardware Diagnostics
Running diagnostics can help identify hardware issues:
- Turn off your laptop.
- Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly until the Startup Menu appears.
- Press F2 to enter System Diagnostics.
- Run a full system test to check for hardware issues.
4. Use HP Support Assistant
HP Support Assistant can help automatically detect and fix issues:
- Download HP Support Assistant if it's not preinstalled: HP Support Assistant.
- Open HP Support Assistant and navigate to the Updates section.
- Check for updates and install any available updates, including BIOS updates that might resolve boot issues.
5. Perform a System Restore
Restoring your system to a previous point can fix update-related problems:
- Turn off your laptop.
- Turn it on and press F11 repeatedly to open the Recovery environment.
- Select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > System Restore.
- Choose a restore point before the update caused issues and follow the prompts.
6. Manual Driver Update
If HP Support Assistant couldn't help, manually update necessary drivers:
- Visit the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads.
- Enter your laptop’s model name to search for drivers.
- Download and install the latest available drivers for your specific model.
7. Reinstall Windows
Reinstalling Windows can refresh your system and resolve expired software issues:
- Create a Windows installation media using another computer: Download Windows 10.
- Insert the installation media (USB or DVD) into your laptop.
- Boot from the installation media and select Install now.
- Follow the prompts to reinstall Windows. Choose the option to Keep personal files to avoid losing data.
