Hi

Why would you want to use  ""kexec""  ??

If you are building your own kernel then that may be the reason.

thanks for the quick reply

we need to use kexec, and we building our own kernel

the question is, why kexec doesn't work on this notebook?

i have asked here:

https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/494631/kexec-relocate-kernel-fails

here:

http://lists-archives.com/linux-kernel/29333806-kexec-relocate_kernel-fails.html

and here:

https://www.spinics.net/lists/kexec/msg22200.html

it seems it is a notebook issue, not of the linux kernel

So it will be a specific kernel to that NoteBook?

You could build your own Distro, rather than just a Kernel.

There are many tools available to build your own customized distros. Here, I list few tools.

I have used SuSE Studio (https://studioexpress.opensuse.org/).  You can take the JeOS (Just enough Operating System), and add your own logo's, drivers, scripts and so much more.

kexec obviously works, because it wouldn't generate an error message if it didn't.

kdump should help isolate the error.

Well if your kernel works, just drop it on a USB stick and boot from it.

No, it is not a spicific kernel for this notebook, it is a kernel that we build for our own purpoces and it should be run on ZBook.

I cann't imagine that the lts version of linux kernel, I have tried even Ubuntu 16 and Ubuntu 18, can breaks the functionality of kexec, so it must be the hardware.

I have investigated briefly the relevant code, the results are here https://unix.stackexchange.com/questions/494631/kexec-relocate-kernel-fails. But the most important question is, why has Ubuntu a similar problem?

Many thanks for your suggestions, but we don't need to build a distro or something else. We need to get kexec to work on ZBook.

Hi

"We need to get kexec to work on ZBook."

Try Debian or SuSE or Fedora or even better Arch.

I expect you mean you need to get your kernel to run on a Zbook.

So Devuan may be what you want to start with.

thanks, i have tried debian, kexec still doesn't work

it doesn't work neither with efi nor bios, therefore it should be not an efi issue

i don't think the problem is in purgatory, since you may find there an endless loop

thank you for your effort
