I am on an hp laptop. I cannot get back my the original function of several of the keys with blue characters like éééèèè^^^çççàààùùùù - they do not even give the character thats shown on the key. For example, when I try to put an apostrophe in I get è. When I try to use quotations I get è. When I try to use a question mark I get é (which at least is the character shown on that key). I have no idea why or how to fix it.

Hi @Jun121212,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Laptop 15-fd0083ca is typing the wrong characters, for example, when you press the ? key it types É, and other keys like ^ ç à ; è , . é ù are also incorrect.
This usually happens when the keyboard layout has changed (often to a Canadian French or other multilingual layout), not because of a hardware defect.

Let’s go step by step to restore the correct keyboard layout.

1. Check and Switch Keyboard Layout

Press Win + Spacebar (hold Windows key, tap Spacebar).

Each tap cycles through the installed keyboard layouts (for example, “ENG US”, “CAN FR”).

Stop when you see ENG US (US Keyboard) in the taskbar language indicator.

Test your keys again.

If the problem goes away after switching, the wrong layout was selected accidentally.

2. Remove Unwanted Keyboard Layouts

Go to Start → Settings → Time & Language → Language & Region.

Under Preferred languages, select the language you use (for example, English (United States)) → click … → Language options.

Under Keyboards, remove any layouts you don’t need (for example, “Canadian French” or “Multilingual Standard”).

Keep only US QWERTY (or your preferred layout).

3. Check Sticky Keys and Accessibility Settings

Go to Settings → Accessibility → Keyboard.

Make sure Sticky Keys, Toggle Keys, and Filter Keys are turned Off.
(These features can sometimes interfere with typing.)

4. Test in Notepad

Open Notepad and try typing ? / \ ; : and other affected characters.

If they appear correctly, the layout is now fixed.

5. If Still Incorrect

Restart the laptop after making the above changes.

If the wrong characters persist even with the correct layout selected, try:

Device Manager → Keyboards → Standard PS/2 Keyboard → Uninstall device

Restart the laptop so Windows reinstalls the driver automatically.

I hope this helps.
