Hi @kermz,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP 15.6-inch Laptop PC is turning on but the screen remains black, there are a few troubleshooting steps you can try.

Check for External Display

  • Connect to an external monitor: Use an HDMI cable to connect your laptop to an external monitor or TV. If the external display works, the issue could be with your laptop's screen or display connection.

Perform a Hard Reset

  • Turn off the laptop and disconnect the power adapter.
  • Remove the battery (if removable).
  • Hold down the power button for 15-30 seconds to discharge any residual power.
  • Reconnect the power adapter and try turning the laptop back on.

Check Brightness

  • Make sure the screen's brightness is turned up (use the brightness keys on your keyboard, usually marked with a sun icon).

Reboot into Safe Mode

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Turn it back on, and immediately press the F8 key (or Shift + F8 on some models) repeatedly to open Safe Mode.
  • If the screen works in Safe Mode, there may be a driver issue.

Check for Display Issues

  • Inspect the screen for any faint image: Shine a flashlight on the screen at an angle. If you see a faint image, it could be an issue with the backlight or display inverter.

Test with an External Keyboard and Mouse

  • Sometimes, the laptop may have booted up but there could be a problem with the display output. Connecting an external keyboard and mouse to the laptop may allow you to troubleshoot further (such as restarting or logging in).

Reset BIOS/UEFI

  • If you're comfortable accessing the BIOS/UEFI, you can try resetting it to default settings to rule out a configuration issue. Restart the laptop, press F10 repeatedly to enter BIOS, and then restore default settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
