Hi @ameliamac,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Given that your HP laptop came with Windows 11 but hasn't been used or updated regularly, it's important to bring it up to date to ensure it runs smoothly. You don't necessarily have to reinstall Windows 11 or take it to a professional right away. Here are some steps you can take to update and troubleshoot your laptop:
1. Connect to the Internet
Ensure your laptop is connected to a reliable internet connection.
2. Check for Windows Updates
Run Windows Update to bring your system up to date.
- Open Settings: Press Win + I to open the Settings app.
- Go to Update & Security: Navigate to Update & Security and then to Windows Update.
- Check for Updates: Click Check for updates. Windows will start downloading and installing the latest updates. This may take some time depending on how many updates are required.
3. Troubleshoot Windows Update
If you encounter issues with Windows Update, use the built-in troubleshooter.
- Open Settings: Press Win + I.
- Go to Update & Security: Navigate to Update & Security.
- Select Troubleshoot: In the left pane, select Troubleshoot.
- Run the Troubleshooter: Click on Additional troubleshooters and then select Windows Update and run the troubleshooter.
4. Free Up Disk Space
Ensure there is enough free space on your hard drive for updates.
- Open Settings: Press Win + I.
- Go to System: Navigate to System and then to Storage.
- Free Up Space: Use the storage settings to delete temporary files and unused applications.
5. Update Drivers
Make sure your hardware drivers are up to date.
- Open Device Manager: Right-click the Start button and select Device Manager.
- Update Drivers: Right-click on each device and select Update driver and choose to search automatically for updated driver software.
6. Use the Windows Update Assistant
If Windows Update isn’t working properly, use the Windows Update Assistant to manually update to the latest version of Windows 11.
- Download the Windows Update Assistant: Go to the Windows 11 download page and download the Update Assistant.
- Run the Update Assistant: Follow the instructions to update your system.
7. Reset Windows (Optional)
If your laptop is still not functioning properly after updates, you may consider resetting Windows. This will reinstall Windows 11 but allow you to keep your files.
- Open Settings: Press Win + I.
- Go to Update & Security: Navigate to Update & Security.
- Select Recovery: In the left pane, select Recovery.
- Reset This PC: Click on Get started under Reset this PC and follow the instructions. Choose to keep your files if prompted.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
