hp notebook
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Laptop (HP notebook) goes into battery power even when it's plugged in. Goes to sleep & logs me off, though it's set not to do that on mains power. Warns me that battery is running low, then switches itself off, even though it's plugged into the mains. Annoying. Anyone know how to stop it? Thanks.

@Mick999-,

Welcome to the HP Forums!

Thank you for posting your query on this forum, it's a great place to find answers.

I reviewed your post and I understand that computer is going to battery mode even when the charger is connected.

Don’t worry, I assure you I will try my best to get this sorted.

In order that I may provide you with an accurate solution, I will need a few more details.

  • When was the last time the computer was working fine?
  • Do you see the light beside the charger port when the charger is connected?
  • Have you tried a different charger?
  • Have you made any software or hardware changes on the computer?
  • Have you performed any troubleshooting steps before posting?

While you respond to that, I recommend you follow the below steps and check if it helps.

Step 1: Click the Windows “Start” button and right-click “Computer.”

Step 2: Click “Manage,” then “Device Manager.”

Step 3: Click the “Batteries” section. A list of devices will appear.

Step 4: Right-click the “Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery” device and click “Uninstall.”

Step 5: Click the “Action” menu item and “Scan for Hardware Changes” to reinstall the driver.

Restart the computer and the issue should be fixed.

If the issue persists, I recommend you update the bios the from the below link and test.

Thanks v much for replying. To try to answer your questions:

I’ve had this problem only in the last couple of weeks, intermittently. I suspect it started with the last Windows 10 update that arrived.

I don’t know if I have a “charger port” and wouldn’t know how to try a different charger. It’s a laptop, with the battery charger just built in as far as I know. There’s a little light right next to the mains socket, if that’s the charger port. This machine is pretty well always plugged in to the mains – I’ve hardly ever unplugged it to carry it about using the battery.

Normally the battery icon says “fully charged 100%” and I just ignore it. It does today again, for now, but lately the battery has been going down – warnings pop up that it’s running low, advising me to plug it in (when it IS plugged in). Then it either logs me off, or switches itself off.

As for troubleshooting steps, I’ve gone into PC Settings, to “Power & Sleep”. It’s set to “never” switch off or sleep on mains, or after 10 mins on battery. I changed it to “never” on battery too, to see if the mains might just kick in if the battery goes flat, but it’s gone back to “10 mins” – I think I may have tried “restore default settings” at some point.

Thanks – it seems to have sorted itself, for now, as mysteriously as it went wrong: battery icon has said Fully Charged 100% all day and the machine is working fine.
