HP ENVY x360 Convertible Laptop PC 13m-bd0023dx

I thought I shut my laptop down, expecting a complete turn off. The battery at that point was 100%. Then I disconnected the power cord. The next day I found the battery at about 50%.

Hi @JEHammond670,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP ENVY X360 Convertible Laptop PC 13m is not shutting down properly and only goes to sleep, causing battery drain overnight, there are a few potential solutions you can try to resolve the issue.

  • Check Power Settings: Ensure that your power settings are configured correctly. Go to "Control Panel" > "Power Options" and check the "Choose what the power buttons do" option. Make sure that the "Shut down" option is selected for both "On battery" and "Plugged in."
  • Update Drivers: Outdated or corrupted drivers can sometimes cause power management issues. Visit the HP website and check for any available updates for your laptop's drivers, especially for the display and power-related components.
  • Windows Updates: Make sure your operating system is up-to-date. Windows updates often include bug fixes and improvements that can resolve power-related problems.
  • Disable Fast Startup: Fast Startup is a feature in Windows that may cause issues with proper shutdown and startup processes. To disable it, go to "Control Panel" > "Power Options" > "Choose what the power buttons do," then click on "Change settings that are currently unavailable" and uncheck "Turn on fast startup."
  • Check for Background Processes: Sometimes, certain background processes or applications can prevent proper shutdown. Use the Task Manager (Ctrl + Shift + Esc) to check for any programs that might be running and preventing shutdown.
  • Battery Calibration: Perform a battery calibration to ensure accurate battery readings. Fully charge your laptop, then allow it to discharge completely. Charge it back to full without interruption, and this can help the system recalibrate the battery settings.
  • BIOS Update: Check the HP website for BIOS updates for your laptop model. BIOS updates can fix various issues, including power management problems.
  • Reset Power Plan Settings: If none of the above solutions work, try resetting your power plan settings to their default values. Open a Command Prompt as an administrator and enter the command: powercfg -restoredefaultschemes
  • Check for Malware: In rare cases, malware can interfere with the shutdown process. Perform a full system scan using your preferred antivirus software to ensure your laptop is clean.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
