Hello,

I got the dreaded BSOD today when I was doing some backup task and had not booted my laptop in awhile so it was already low on memory resources.

When I attempted to reboot normally, the computer got stuck on the Windows flag screen and I was unable to do a windows recovery but was able to restore to an earlier restore point.

 

However, when I rebooted, the Pavillion Dv6 is still stuck on Windows flag screen so just in case i booted into safe mode and did chkdsk /f which showed no problems at all thought it took a long time.

 

I have gone into HP Diagnostics and tested memory and startup and both give me the Failure ID for Memory Test which Failed and lists the Memory MOdule. I have two SIMM's w/4Gb Memory each, should I go ahead and replace both SIMMs or go ahead and test each one?  If both Memory Modules failed is there anyway to know if they both failed?

 

also, I never got around to creating a win7 recovery install CD/USB, and I can't startup HP support assistant, I'm guessing is this because I have no memory in Win 7 with just basic services loaded?

 

Anyone have an idea on this?

Best would be to test each memory chip one by one , so you can now remove one of them, test the other, etc...

 

 

  • The root cause is a hardware failure - your memory (RAM chips) module has (have) failed.

 

  • Once you identify if one or two of them have failed, you need to open your computer, get the faulty module out and buy a new one of the same type. Currently you should have 8 GB DDR3 RAM, your new one must be the same:

DDR SDRAM type >> (probably 2/3)  https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DDR_SDRAM

8 GB (1x8 or 2x4)

same speed/frequency

You can check the current frequency of the RAM by using AID64 software >> http://download.aida64.com/aida64extreme_build_4557_mv3fjhs6wt.zip

or you may check in the official HP service and maintenance guide

 

  • You can buy the memory from a reputable local tech store, order it online or check the HP Parts Store >> http://partsurfer.hp.com/
