@Marcipink, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Let’s troubleshoot why your F2 key isn’t working in Excel:

Step-by-step Checks:

Function Lock (Fn Lock)

Some laptops require you to hold the Fn key to use standard F-keys (like F2).

  • Try pressing: Fn + F2
  • Or toggle Fn Lock: This is usually done with Fn + Esc or Fn + Shift, depending on your laptop model.

Check Excel Settings

Excel may have had a setting or shortcut reassigned:

  • Go to File > Options > Advanced.
  • Under Editing options, ensure that "Allow editing directly in cells" is checked.
    • If this option is unchecked, the F2 key won’t activate edit mode.

Check Keyboard Shortcuts in Excel Add-ins or Third-Party Tools

Some add-ins (like Power BI, Zoom, Grammarly, etc.) can override default shortcuts.

  • Try disabling all Excel add-ins temporarily:
    • Navigate to File > Options > Add-ins > Manage: Excel Add-ins > Go....
  • You can also try opening Excel in Safe Mode by holding Ctrl while launching Excel.

Try in Another App

Test the F2 key in another application, such as Notepad or File Explorer (where it can rename files), to rule out a hardware problem.

Update or Reinstall Keyboard Driver

In Device Manager:

  • Expand Keyboards, right-click your keyboard, and select Update Driver.
  • Alternatively, you can uninstall the driver and reboot your laptop; Windows will reinstall it automatically.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
