Hello @sourpatchsweeti, and welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for posting your question. I'm here to help you get things back on track.

I understand your HP laptop is stuck on the “Preparing Automatic Repair” screen and won’t proceed or restart properly. Let’s walk through a few steps to help resolve this issue.

Perform a Hard Reset

Since you've already tried removing the battery, let's ensure a full hard reset is done properly:

  • Power off the laptop completely.
  • Disconnect all external devices (USB drives, printers, etc.).
  • If the battery is removable, take it out.
  • Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
  • Reconnect the battery and power adapter, then try turning it on.

Boot into Recovery Mode

If the hard reset doesn’t help, try accessing Windows Recovery:

  • Power off the laptop.
  • Turn it on and immediately press the Esc key repeatedly (once per second) until the Startup Menu appears.
  • Press F11 to open System Recovery.

If F11 works, you can try:

  • System Restore (to revert to a previous working state)
  • Startup Repair
  • Reset this PC (choose “Keep my files” if you want to preserve data)

Use HP Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI)

Let’s check if there’s a hardware issue:

  • Turn off the laptop.
  • Turn it on and press Esc repeatedly, then press F2 for HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run the System Tests (especially the Hard Drive and Memory tests).

Boot from Windows Installation Media

If recovery options don’t work:

  • Create a Windows 10/11 installation USB using the Microsoft Media Creation Tool.
  • Boot from the USB (press Esc > F9 for Boot Menu).
  • Choose Repair your computer > Troubleshoot > Startup Repair or System Restore.

Reset BIOS Defaults

Sometimes BIOS settings can interfere:

  • Turn on the laptop and press Esc, then F10 to enter BIOS.
  • Press F9 to load defaults, then F10 to save and exit.

I hope the information shared has been useful and resolves your concern.

Wishing you a smooth and hassle-free experience ahead!
