so i bought this laptop about a year ago and it was working pretty good and it was a second hand. i used it for my school work and sometimes played games on it aswell and the battery life was also pretty good. but today when i tried to turn it on it wouldnt so i tried it with the charger and it turned it but the charging led was not on. i used it for about an hour with the charger but it was still stuck on 9%. then when i took off the charger the laptop immedeatly turned off, however it was perfectly fine yesterday it just randomly did this today. so i was wondering if there is a way to fix without changing the battery?

@thehmz, Welcome to the HP Support Community!
Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding Battery Issues!
We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.
Check the Battery Health: Use HP's built-in tools to check the battery's health. You can do this by:
- Typing "HP Support Assistant" in the Windows search bar and opening the app.
- In the app, find the "Battery" section to see its health status.
Perform a Battery Calibration: Sometimes the battery's charge level might not be accurate. You can calibrate the battery by:
- Charging the battery to 100%.
- Let the laptop use the battery until it completely drains and shuts down.
- Recharge it to 100% again.
Check the Charger: Ensure the charger is working correctly:
- Try using a different compatible HP charger if available, to see if the issue persists.
- Check if the charging port is free of dust and debris.
Inspect the Battery Connections: Over time, connections might loosen:
- Remove and reseat the battery (if your model allows for removal).
Update Drivers and BIOS: Outdated drivers can cause charging issues:
- Visit HP's official website and ensure all system drivers and BIOS are updated.
- Use the HP Support Assistant for a simple update check.
Hope this helps!
Take care, and have an amazing day!

@thehmz, Before we conclude it’s definitely the battery, here are a few extra things they can try (sometimes it’s a small fix hiding in plain sight):
Hard Reset: Shut down the laptop, unplug the charger, and if the battery is removable, take it out. Hold the power button for ~15–20 seconds to discharge any residual power, then reconnect and try again.
Battery Driver Reset: In Device Manager, expand Batteries, right-click Microsoft AC Adapter and Microsoft ACPI-Compliant Control Method Battery, and uninstall both. Restart the laptop, and Windows will reinstall them automatically.
Check with HP Hardware Diagnostics (UEFI): Restart and tap Esc → F2 → run the battery test there. This sometimes gives a clearer reading than HP Support Assistant.
Different Power Outlet / Adapter Check: Just to rule out a weak power supply, try a different wall socket or another compatible HP adapter if possible.
BIOS Battery Reset (if available): Some HP models have a “Battery Reset” option in BIOS → Advanced tab. That forces the system to re-detect the battery.
Hope this helps!
