Hi @bigwarrior,
Welcome to the HP Support Community.
I understand that the touchpad works normally most of the time but intermittently stops responding and then starts working again. I also understand that you have already uninstalled the existing ELAN driver and installed the updated driver from the HP website, but the issue continues.
Let's try the following steps.
1. Perform a power reset
- Turn off the notebook.
- Disconnect the AC adapter.
- Disconnect any unnecessary USB devices or other peripherals.
- With the AC adapter disconnected, press and hold the Power button for approximately 15 seconds.
- Reconnect the AC adapter, turn on the notebook, and check the touchpad.
2. Run the Touchpad hardware test
- Turn off the notebook by holding the Power button for at least five seconds.
- Turn it on and immediately press Esc repeatedly, about once every second.
- When the Startup Menu appears, press F2.
- Select Component Tests > Mouse/Touchpad.
- Select the available test and choose Run once.
- Follow the on-screen instructions.
If the test reports a failure, please make a note of the failure information displayed.
3. Check Windows Update
In Windows, search for Check for updates and install the available updates. On Windows 11, also check Advanced options > Optional updates for available updates, and restart the notebook after installation.
For reference: HP Notebook PCs - Troubleshoot the touchpad | HP® Support
If the touchpad passes the hardware test but continues to stop responding intermittently, please share the exact HP notebook model/product number and the version of Windows installed so we can check the model-specific drivers and available support options.
Take care and have a good day.
I'm an HP Employee.
