Pavilion dv5
Microsoft Windows Vista

I would like to install Windows 8 and then upgrade to 8.1.  I have an HP Pavilion dv5 running Vista right now.  I need this to be EASY without a lot of technical flap.   I am not a tech guru, so instructions as if you were speaking to a young child.  Simple instructions and a link to the download.

Sorry, not possible.

When Microsoft came out with a new Windows version, they offered in-place Upgrade downloads that you could purchase and upgrade your PC to the next OS version.  The exception to this was when they offered to upgrade Win7 PCs to Win10.

There was no way to upgrade from Vista to Win8x, effectively skipping two versions of the OS (MS counted Windows 8 and Windows 8.1 as different versions).

Additionally, MS has dropped all but security update support for Windows 8x -- so I doubt you can even get it from them anymore.

Today, you would have to go with Windows 10 -- and that is unlikely to work because I will not come with drivers for Vista-era hardware.
