Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Hi,

My hp is 6 years old. it updated itself to windows 10 early this year. last night it was doing a windows update and there was a problem.  now when it boots up it will get to the windows startup window, then the screen goes black. I am trying to update the bios driver. When I go into the system startup, it shows the operating system as windows 7. where can I find an updated bios driver for my system. Thanks

Just so you know, if you use Win10 media to do a Clean-Install, that will OVERWRITE what is on your drive, essentially removing everything.  This is NOT the same as a Repair-Install, in which only the OS files are overwritten.

What I would suggest, instead, is seeing if you can simply Repair the OS.

Once you have the Win10 install media, follow these directions: http://www.tenforums.com/tutorials/2294-advanced-startup-options-boot-windows-10-a.html

You will need to go to the Advanced Options screen and click on Startup Repair. You will probably have to run Startup Repair three times for it to fix all the boot loader problems.

When done, your PC should boot OK. If it does not, there is a more serious problem.

Hello @fabybabyhp

There are no Windows 10 driver updates for your system as HP only supported Win 7 drivers.

IF you were running Windows 10 as an upgrade, you would do best to clean re-install Win 10 now.

You would need an 8 GB USB flash drive and use the MS Media Creation Tool to make the media with from a different computer.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows10/

Tap the ESC key at power up and choose the Boot Options (F9) to boot from you USB media.

Follow the prompts.

But it could be that you can get away with reverting back to a restore point.

You would still need the Windows install  media to start the computer in Safe Mode.

Then do the restore point to roll back prior to the update causing the issue.

Click the link below and go to the section for Entering Safe Mode from outside Windows.

http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c03439317#AbT1

If you can get Safe Mode to boot, you can revert back to a restore point.

Let me know if you need further instructions.

Yes a clean install will remove everything and start you over again.

Note a Windows Repair/Refresh install can save files but will still remove third party programs you have installed.

Heres clarification on each...

But either way, I should have mentioned to be sure to back up any data to an external drive if you have not done so first.

thanks for your help. I was able to get the install tool on a flash drive. I booted outside of windows.  was able to get into safe mood. system said there were no system restore points. went into advanced options to do system repair. first time system repair went thru in about 10 minutes. second time tried to run repair thru booting flash drive, took forever to get to boot screen. computer emitted a sustained beep sound for quite some time. finally got into system repair again.  this time said could not repair system. tried again and got same message. so what should i do next? im not really computer savy so feel free to be as specific as possible. should i reset it? with files or without? thanks

You can certainly reset it with files in tact, but if you have them backed up already, I prefer to clean install and start new.

In other words, delete all partions and start over, that way nothing corrupted gets carried over.

Just my preference.

Here's a video from the Windows 10 forum on how to clean install with deleting all partitions manually during the install.
