Hi @vijaycoldwell,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If your HP laptop is not detecting your HP device to check the serial number and warranty, you can follow these steps to resolve the issue:
1. Ensure Proper Connection
Reconnect Device:
- Make sure the device (mouse, printer, etc.) is properly connected to the laptop. Try using a different USB port if available.
- If it’s a wireless device, ensure it is paired correctly.
Restart the Laptop:
- Sometimes a simple restart can resolve detection issues.
2. Check Device Manager
Open Device Manager:
- Right-click on the Start button and select Device Manager.
Expand Relevant Sections:
- Expand the sections relevant to your device (e.g., Mice and other pointing devices, Printers, Universal Serial Bus controllers).
Look for Unrecognized Devices:
- Look for any devices with a yellow exclamation mark or listed as Unknown device. Right-click on them and select Update driver.
Uninstall and Reinstall:
- If updating the driver doesn’t work, try uninstalling the device (right-click and select Uninstall device), then unplug and replug the device to reinstall the driver automatically.
3. Use HP Support Assistant
Install HP Support Assistant:
- If not already installed, download and install the HP Support Assistant.
Run HP Support Assistant:
- Open HP Support Assistant and use it to detect your device and provide information about the serial number and warranty.
4. Check BIOS/UEFI Settings
Enter BIOS/UEFI Settings:
- Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS/UEFI settings by pressing a key during startup (usually F2, F10, Del, or Esc).
Check USB Ports:
- Ensure that the USB ports are enabled and that there are no settings preventing the detection of devices.
5. Check for Windows Updates
Go to Windows Update:
- Open Settings > Update & Security > Windows Update.
Check for Updates:
- Ensure your operating system is fully updated, as updates can resolve hardware detection issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
