When I ran hardware diagnostics my computer and chose to update BIOS the computer locked up and I couldn't restart.  Fortunately, I had a restore point.  Should I not try to update the BIOS?

Hi @rfarr100

Welcome to the HP Forum.

I would guess you ran HP Hardware Diagnostics for a valid reason. Can't guess why you did this.

It is good to see you could do a system restore either within Windows or by using the WinRE.

I would not do a BIOS update if you are having stability problems.

Check your PC's hardware again using HP Diagnostics if your PC is unstable:

Start the PC. Repeatedly tap the "ESC" key.

Select "F2". Run system and component tests to confirm: a drive problem, a memory problem, or other component problem. Run extensive tests.

Also check Windows System Files:

Open an Admin command prompt when running Windows as follows:

Open Search then enter "command prompt". Right-click on the search result.

Select "Run as Administrator".

Enter the following commands, one at a time. Wait for each command to complete before running the next command.

DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth note: the PC must be connected to the network when using the DISM command.

Enter the next command to verify system files are okay.

sfc /scannow

Try the correct BIOS update for your MB again if Windows is stable and you have no hardware problems.

Regards
