When I turn on the laptop, a message appears that says "Preparing recovery"

Then the computer shuts down, turns back on by itself, and I get this message again... then it starts looping again...
Tests:
1) I opened the laptop, removed the RAM and hard drive.
2) I ran a boot test with the F2 key.
3) I tried booting from a USB flash drive.
4) I removed the hard drive and replaced it with another.

The problem remains the same.

Hi @alessioteobalde

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I am sorry for the difficulty you are facing with your HP Pavilion B&O laptop looping on “Preparing recovery.” I understand how discouraging it feels when you’ve already tried removing RAM and hard drive, running diagnostics, and even booting from USB, yet the system continues to restart into the same loop. I appreciate the effort you’ve put in to test multiple hardware scenarios.

Here are steps you can try to break the recovery loop and restore functionality:

Step 1: Perform a Hard Reset

  • Disconnect the power adapter and remove any external devices.
  • Hold down the power button for 15–20 seconds.
  • Reconnect the adapter and try powering on again.

Step 2: Access BIOS Setup

  • Power on and immediately press F10 repeatedly.
  • In BIOS, check if the hard drive or SSD is detected.
  • If detected, confirm boot order is set to prioritize the internal drive.

Step 3: Run System Diagnostics

  • Power on and press F2 to open HP PC Hardware Diagnostics.
  • Run a full system test, including memory and storage.
  • If all tests pass, proceed to recovery options.

Step 4: Attempt HP Recovery Environment

  • Power on and press F11 repeatedly.
  • If the recovery environment loads, choose “Troubleshoot” > “Reset this PC.”
  • Select “Keep my files” if available, otherwise “Remove everything.”

Step 5: Use HP Cloud Recovery Tool

Step 6: Update BIOS and Firmware

These steps should help you bypass the recovery loop and reinstall a clean operating system.
