The computer is 4 years old and started getting random notifications during use stating, "System Not Responding," but giving options to wait or restart. Mostly, I choose the wait option, and the notification will pop up maybe a second or third time and return to normal functioning without any delays. Does anybody have the same issue and know why and how to fix it?

Hi @Lenora7,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand the "System Not Responding" issue on a Chromebook can be caused by a few common factors, particularly on an older device like yours. Here are a few potential causes and solutions to try:
1. Check for Chrome OS Updates
- Outdated software can cause performance issues and system lags. Go to Settings > About Chrome OS and select Check for Updates to make sure your Chromebook is running the latest version of Chrome OS.
2. Clear Cache and Browsing Data
- Accumulated browsing data and cached files can slow down your device. Go to Chrome > Settings > Privacy and Security > Clear Browsing Data and choose Cached images and files and Cookies and other site data. Clearing these might help reduce lag and system delays.
3. Remove Unnecessary Extensions
- Extensions can consume system resources, especially if several are running in the background. Go to Chrome > Extensions and disable or remove any extensions you don't need or recognize.
4. Check for Problematic Apps or Extensions
- Certain apps or extensions may not be fully compatible with Chrome OS updates or may consume excessive memory, causing these issues. Try disabling extensions one by one to see if the problem resolves, or perform a Powerwash (see below).
5. Powerwash (Factory Reset)
- A Powerwash will reset your Chromebook to factory settings, which can help resolve persistent software issues. Be sure to back up any important files before doing this.
- Go to Settings > Advanced > Reset Settings > Powerwash and follow the prompts.
6. Memory or Storage Issues
- Check if your device is running low on storage or memory. Low storage can cause performance issues. Free up some space by deleting files you don’t need. Go to Files and delete large files, especially from the Downloads folder.

I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
