I had a quick question - I currently have a 5 year old dv6 - 1370ev with Windows 8.1 on it. When I bought it, it had Windows 7 on it. I do not have the CD or the product key for Windows 8 anymore. I was wondering if I used your method or the "Remove everything and reinstall windows" would it still ask me for the product key?
I am trying to remove everything from my laptop.
Do let me know. Thank you.

Use F8 to open the command menu which starts with "Fix my computer"
Select on the second screen use Microsoft recovery tools
On the third screen, third option left column, reset to out of the box state.
Bingo.
