Hi @yifatsegev,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I'd be glad to help you!

I understand how frustrating it can be to deal with slow performance from day one, especially when you’re excited to get the most out of your new computer. Let's see if we can turn things around with the SSD upgrade!

To better understand your situation:

  1. Has the slow performance been noticeable when opening applications, during startup, or while browsing the web?
  2. Is your laptop running out of storage, or have you noticed that it's struggling with multi-tasking or larger programs?
  3. Have you checked the system's current hard drive health or used any diagnostic tools to test its speed?

Here’s how upgrading to an SSD can help and the steps you can follow to install it:

1) Will an SSD Improve Performance?

Yes, upgrading to an SSD (Solid-State Drive) can significantly improve your laptop's performance, especially in the following areas:

  • Faster boot times: SSDs are much quicker at loading the operating system, meaning your computer will boot up faster.
  • Improved responsiveness: Programs and applications stored on an SSD will open much more quickly compared to a traditional HDD.
  • Better multitasking: SSDs can handle data more efficiently, which improves performance when switching between applications.

2) Steps to Replace the Hard Drive with an SSD:

Back up Your Data:

  • Before you make any changes, ensure that all your important files are backed up to an external drive or cloud storage. Replacing the hard drive will erase everything on it.

Prepare the Necessary Tools:

  • You’ll need a small screwdriver, a cloning tool (optional), and your new SSD (240 GB). If you want to clone your existing OS and data from the old drive, you can use cloning software like Macrium Reflect or EaseUS Todo Backup.

Shut Down and Disconnect the Laptop:

  • Power off the laptop completely, unplug it from any power sources, and remove the battery (if possible).

Remove the Old HDD and Install the SSD:

  • Locate the hard drive compartment. On your HP notebook, it’s usually accessible from the bottom panel. Use a screwdriver to remove the screws and open the compartment.
  • Disconnect the old hard drive and remove it carefully. Then, place the SSD in the same slot, ensuring it’s securely connected.

Reinstall the Operating System:

  • After installing the SSD, you can reinstall Windows by creating a bootable USB with the Windows installation media or using a recovery disk if you have one.
  • If you cloned your original hard drive, you can simply boot into the SSD and continue using it as your primary drive.

Note" After replacing the SSD, you may also want to check the system performance and make sure TRIM (for SSDs) is enabled, which helps with maintaining the SSD's performance over time. You can check this by running "fsutil behavior query DisableDeleteNotify" in the command prompt.

This upgrade should provide a noticeable improvement in speed and overall performance.
