When I tried to reset my PIN while Windows was running, I saw an error message but thought it had worked.

However, when I signed out to test whether the PIN had been reset, I saw the error:

"Something happened and your PIN isn't available. Click to set up your PIN again."

This message prevents me from using my fingerprint or password to sign in.

Later, I attempted to reset the device, but I encountered a BitLocker error.

When I tried to unlock it using my Microsoft account, I faced an issue with multi-factor authentication (MFA) on my mobile phone. The error message said:

"Try another verification method. That verification method isn't working right now. Please try another method."

Currently, I don't have any other verification methods set up.

Later today, when I checked my Microsoft account, I found that my device had been deregistered.

How can I unlock my laptop and resolve all these issues?

@Shebl22, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you're facing a complex issue involving:

  • A broken Windows Hello PIN
  • BitLocker recovery errors
  • Microsoft account MFA issues
  • Device deregistration

Let’s walk through the steps to recover access to your laptop and resolve these issues.

Step 1: Recover from “PIN isn’t available” Error

This error typically occurs when the Windows Hello PIN system files are corrupted. Since you can’t log in using fingerprint or password either, try the following:

Option A: Use Safe Mode to Remove the PIN

  1. Force restart your laptop 3 times to trigger Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE).
  2. Go to Troubleshoot > Advanced Options > Startup Settings > Restart.
  3. Press F4 to boot into Safe Mode.
  4. Once in Safe Mode:
    • Go to Settings > Accounts > Sign-in options.
    • Remove the PIN under Windows Hello PIN.
  5. Restart normally and try signing in with your password.

If this doesn’t work, proceed to the next step.

Step 2: BitLocker Recovery

If you tried resetting the PC and encountered a BitLocker prompt, you’ll need the BitLocker recovery key.

Find Your BitLocker Recovery Key

If you cannot access the recovery key, unfortunately, you won’t be able to decrypt the drive. In that case, a clean installation of Windows will be required (see Step 4).

Step 3: Microsoft Account MFA Issue

If MFA is failing and you have no backup methods:

  1. Go to https://account.live.com/proofs/manage
  2. Try signing in from a trusted device or browser where you’ve previously logged in.
  3. If that fails, use the account recovery form:

Step 4: Reinstall Windows (If Recovery Fails)

If you can’t bypass BitLocker and can’t recover your Microsoft account, you’ll need to reinstall Windows:

  1. Use another PC to download the Windows 10/11 Media Creation Tool:
  2. Create a bootable USB drive.
  3. Boot your locked laptop from the USB.
  4. Choose Custom Install and delete all partitions (this will erase all data).
  5. Proceed with a clean installation.

Preventive Tips After Recovery

  • Set up multiple MFA methods (authenticator app, phone, email).
  • Back up your BitLocker recovery key to a USB or print it.
  • Enable local account access as a backup to Microsoft login.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
