Hi @brendabruce
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're getting a system error when trying to open a JPG file, it could be caused by several issues. Let's go through some steps to troubleshoot and resolve the problem:
1. Check the File Integrity:
- File Corruption: It's possible the JPG file is corrupted. Try opening other JPG files to see if the issue is specific to that one file. If only this file gives you an error, the file itself may be damaged.
- Test with Other Programs: Try opening the file with a different image viewer or editing program. For example, you can try using:
- Microsoft Photos (built into Windows)
- Paint
- IrfanView (a free image viewer)
- GIMP or Photoshop (image editing software)
If the file still doesn’t open, it’s likely corrupted.
2. Use the Windows Troubleshooter:
- File Associations: Sometimes, your computer might not have the correct app set to open JPG files. To fix this:
- Right-click the JPG file.
- Choose Open with > Choose another app.
- Select Photos or another image viewer from the list.
- Check the box for "Always use this app to open .jpg files
3. Update or Reinstall Image Viewer:
- If you're using a specific image viewer (like Photos or Windows Photo Viewer), try updating it via the Microsoft Store or reinstalling it to fix any broken components.
- To update Microsoft Photos:
- Open the Microsoft Store.
- Click the three dots in the upper right corner and select Downloads and updates.
- Click Get updates.
- To update Microsoft Photos:
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
