I have a HP Pavilion x2 running Windows 10 (fully up to date)
Normally I sign in with a PIN however recently every couple of times I try to use the PIN it comes up with the following.
"This sign in option has been locked out for security reasons. Use a different sign in or connect your device to a power source for 2 hours then re-start it and try again."
It is possible to sign in with a password still after choosing this from "sign in options"
So far I've performed a System Reset and also deleted and re-input the password but the problem always returns.

Hi Andy, I've found these tools useful...
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/component-store-corruption-repair-windows-image (the 'Restore health' tool)
also this one...
and this one (solution 3)...
http://www.isumsoft.com/windows-10/cannot-sign-into-microsoft-account.html
and finally, the microsoft accounts troubleshooter is downloaded from here...
Not sure if one option is better than another, but I'm trying them all, especially the 'solution 3'....will report on how I go, good luck! cheers,
jane

Microsoft account
Reset your Microsoft account password online. You can reset your password on any device connected to the Internet.
See the Microsoft password reset page (in English) to reset your password.
Local account
Use one of the following options to reset the password for your local account.
- If you have created a password reset disk, use the disk to reset your password. See Reset your local user account password using a password reset disk.
- If you do not have a password reset disk, you may be able to reset the password from a different administrator account. See Changing the local user account password from another user account.
- If you are not able to access the account see Accessing your account when no other option is available.
If you need help determining the type of account you set up on the computer, continue to Which type of account did you create?

Hi Chimney_83
None of what you have written applies. I *am* able to log in to my Windows 10 Computer but only with my Microsoft Account Password.
My probelm is I have set up a PIN which sometimes works and sometimes does not. When it fails to work I can still change my Sign-in options to Password and then gain access.
The error message is very specific and is detailed in my initial post. The same issue including an identical error message is being reported by some MS Surface on the Surface Support Forums. Over there it is being suggested it is a hardware problem. However other than this my device works fine.
The issue happens both to myself and my wife who log on to the same device using a PIN associated with our Microsoft Account. It does not happen to either of us when using our HP all in One Desktop only the Pavilion 2 in 1.
Thus far I have done a full System Refresh plus deleted and reinstating the A/C PIN.

Hi, I have exactly the same problem on my HP Pavillion 2 in 1, and have tried the same resetting of PIN etc, but nothing works to stop this sign eventually returning again, so annoying...it is only the PIN sign in that gets blocked, not the password sign in...thankfully

Hi jcoo1212 some of the posts on the MS surface Forums are from HP users so it's not just a Surface issue. There is as yet nothing I can find on HP Forums so it's great you have posted here. Hopefully others who are affected will find us via Google. The Surface Forums seem to indicate the issue is associated with the recent Anniversary Update.
I have reset the 2 in 1 from the MS Settings opting to save my files. This deleted all non out of the box app and other X86 programs I'd intallled. I guess I could have opted for the Reset my PC and delete my files option but I was unsure if this would give me a basic generic W10 install so I played safe. I'm not 100% sure but I don't think the Reset option I chose deleted user accounts so I've decided to dive a little deeper.
I have just initiated an HP reset. Turn off and then back on whilst repeatedly press F11. This should hopefully reset it to how it came out of the box. I expect I'll then have to update Windows 10 a few times and set up the PC from scratch including creating accounts. It's a big job but if it doesn't work I'll probably have to return the device under warranty. However fingers crossed I'm successful and it doesn't come to this.
I'll report back on how it goes.

Hi Andy, thanks for your reply, I've looked for ages on different forums to find this specific problem, so it was a relief to find your posting. I don't want to put a dampner on things, but I've had this problem since before the anniversary update, and have tried resetting, but perhaps not thorough enough to remove everything. I've had two Acer 2 in 1's before this and never had this problem...will be interested to hear the results of your endeavours, thanks

Thanks for the reply and describing the issue further.
Recommend you to check for Microsoft updates using the Settings option on the start menu.
Run HP Support Assistant and check for updates and install all of them. Click here.
Try to create a new account and check it works fine.
Kudos to you for creating a PIN for the computer, definitely helpful when the password does not work.
Another suggestion, make sure the computer is connected to the internet when you are logging in.

I have restored my 2 in 1 back to it's day 1 setting it was a very time consuming and laborious endevour. I've then set the device up from scratch and on the way updated Windows and set up my Microsoft Account from scratch on this device including creating a PIN. At first I thought I'd got rid of the issue but sadly after 24 hours it's back with a vengence and I can only log in with a password not with a PIN. I think I need to explore sending this device back under warranty. It came from John Lewis and I'm not sure if I contact them or HP UK. Advice would be welcomed.

BTW - Chimney 83
The links you have posted all relate to being unable to log in with a password. This is not and never was my problem. Never the less I have explored the links you have provided and after considerable time expended concluded that nothing is relevent to my problem.
As is the way with help forums you are posting stuff possibly without reading the exact nature of the problem or worse you understand the problem but post irrelevent answers to what are other users similar problems.
If this was an easy one I'd have got an answer via Google in a heartbeat but there is nothing out there. That's why I need support not fobbing off.
My problem in a nutshell is that when I try to log in via a PIN I get an error message. I can still log in using my Microsoft account password. This is 100% about the PIN.
Question????
I've done about everything a user could be expected to do.
My skillset is way above many consumers but I am beaten.
Hopefully you can answer the following question in plain english.
How do I return my device under warranty? I am UK based and purchased the device from John Lewis.

Hi Andy and Chimney, thanks for your responses, I too have done a reset on my 2 in 1 Andy, and so far the PIN is working, though it's only day 1! I'm not as tech savvy as you, but when I was setting up windows 10 and restoring apps, a notice came up from microsoft security saying there was a problem syncing my microsoft account on all devices, so I downloaded a microsoft app called 'account troubleshooter' to check my phone & other Acer laptop and make sure they're all synced. I'm not sure if this is at all relevant to our problem or not, but I'll let you know if I have any success over the next few days, I'm in NZ btw, cheers, j
