Hi Andy, I've found these tools useful...
http://www.thewindowsclub.com/component-store-corruption-repair-windows-image (the 'Restore health' tool)
also this one...
and this one (solution 3)...
http://www.isumsoft.com/windows-10/cannot-sign-into-microsoft-account.html
and finally, the microsoft accounts troubleshooter is downloaded from here...
Not sure if one option is better than another, but I'm trying them all, especially the 'solution 3'....will report on how I go, good luck! cheers,
jane

That's a shame as I thought you had it sussed too.
I ran the Microsoft Account Troubleshooter and also Solution 3 changing the option to Automatic. One of these worked and currently the problem has gone away.
I would have posted sooner but wanted to give it some time.
Will report back if it starts again.

Success at last Andy, I did a complete reinstall of windows 10 and applied solution 3, and the PIN sign in is working fine, problem solved! Thanks for this exchange and shared search for solutions...very productive! All the best to you,
jane

Hi Jane
I've had no re-occurance of this problem for 2-3 days and put it down to Solution 3 in your earlier post.
However I guess as we struggle with problems with our devices we try many things so it sometimes becomes difficult to identify a single solution. In addition to the PIN Log on problem I had a number of silly issues and my instinct was that the device was slow and playing catchup.
I listened to a Podcast last week where Atom Processors (as used by the Pavilion X2) were described as being flaky and also noted that these devices only have 2 GB of RAM. I tapped into Windows Task Manager and noted that with nothing running the RAM useage was running at 75%. Once Edge was opened this went to 95%. I also noted that new devices to market with Atom processors such as the Linx 1020 still only have have 2 GB of RAM so somebody must think it's enough.
I Googled with mixed results if 2GB was actually enough, some said yes and some no. However I came across an HP site page that said these devices should have a minimum of 16GB spare hard drive memory to run effectively. Mine was running just under this so I deleted my music from my Onedrive Synch on the device and immediately added 10GB of additional space. The really interesting bit is that before I did this the HP Support Assistant said there were no new updates but afterwards it offered me 3 x updates including a Chipset/System update.
It's a well known fact that to install updates you need a bit of "room" for the installer to do it's stuff. I installed the updates and the device is now running fast, smooth and to date (fingers crossed) no problems with PIN sign in.
The device is currently delivering it's best performance since I bought it.

that's great news Andy, and thanks for the heads up about having enough storage space, I'll do the same and see what HP Support assistant offers me, I actully think the Pavillion X2 is the best of the 2 in 1's I've tried, so anything we can try or do to maximize its performance is a bonus, cheers for now, j

Hi,
I am having the same sign in problem. It's telling me my sign in is disabled because of failed sign in attempts (there have been none) it repeated shutdowns (only shutdown to do an update it wanted to do!)
Because I can't log in, I can't access anything on my laptop to reinstall anything.
Help!
I only have my mobile phone as a separate device obviously to be online with. No idea what to do for my laptop.
Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!
