Hi @ekm5,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how confusing it must be to see a “Video IO Failed” result in HP diagnostics, especially when everything else checks out fine and the issue only happens with one game.

Let’s break this down and explore what you can do:

🧪 What “Video IO Failed” Means

This typically points to a problem with how the GPU communicates with the display or handles rendering tasks. It doesn’t always mean hardware failure; it could be:

  • A driver issue
  • A game-specific compatibility bug
  • Or even a power/thermal-related restart trigger

Steps to Fix or Isolate the Issue

1. Update Graphics Drivers

  • Use HP Support Assistant or go directly to:
    • AMD Drivers (for integrated GPU)
    • NVIDIA Drivers (for RTX 3050)

Make sure to clean install the drivers using DDU (Display Driver Uninstaller) if the issue persists.

2. Check Game Compatibility

  • What game is causing the restart?
  • Some older or poorly optimized games can trigger GPU crashes or power spikes.
  • Try running the game in windowed mode or with lower graphics settings.

3. Disable Fast Startup and Hybrid Sleep

  • Go to Control Panel > Power Options > Choose what the power buttons do
  • Click “Change settings that are currently unavailable”
  • Uncheck “Turn on fast startup”

4. Run GPU Stress Tests

  • Use tools like FurMark or Unigine Heaven to test GPU stability.
  • If the laptop restarts during these tests, it’s likely a thermal or power issue.

5. Check Event Viewer Logs

  • Press Win + X → Event Viewer → Windows Logs → System
  • Look for Critical errors around the time of the restart (e.g., Kernel-Power 41)

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
