Hi @vishalnagar410,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

,I understand your touchpad is not detected after upgrading to Windows 11 24H2, and in Device Manager you see

This device cannot start. (Code 10) – A request for the HID descriptor failed
for the I2C HID device.

This usually means the new Windows build is missing or incompatible with the correct I2C/touchpad driver.
Let’s fix it step by step.

1. Run Windows Troubleshooter First

Go to Settings → System → Troubleshoot → Other troubleshooters → Keyboard / Hardware and Devices → Run.

Sometimes Windows will reinstall the right driver automatically.

2. Update BIOS / UEFI

An outdated BIOS can prevent the new I2C HID driver from initializing.

Go to your laptop manufacturer’s support site.

Download and install the latest BIOS/UEFI firmware for your model.

Restart the PC after the update.

3. Install the Latest Touchpad / I2C Driver from the OEM

Windows 11 24H2 often removes older Syaptics/ELAN/Precision drivers.

Identify your laptop brand and model.

Visit the official support page for that model.

Download the latest Windows 11-compatible touchpad driver (for many laptops it’s Intel Serial IO / I2C driver plus the actual Synaptics / ELAN / Precision driver).

Install both the chipset/serial IO package and the touchpad package.

Restart the computer.

Generic Windows Update drivers often don’t work well on 24H2 for older laptops — the manufacturer’s package is essential.

4. Remove the Faulty Device and Re-Detect

If the driver package doesn’t help:

Open Device Manager → Human Interface Devices.

Right-click the problematic I2C HID Device → Uninstall device → Check “Delete the driver software for this device” → Uninstall.

Restart the PC.

Windows should reinstall the correct driver automatically or allow you to point it to the OEM driver you downloaded.

5. Disable Modern Standby (Advanced / Temporary)

Some older laptops have firmware that conflicts with Windows 11 24H2’s power mode.

Open Command Prompt (Admin) and run:

powercfg /a

If only Modern Standby is supported, you can try disabling it in BIOS (if available) or via a registry tweak (check your OEM’s guidance).

Restart and test again.

I hope this helps.
