HP840 G6 Elitebook saying boot failure is enabled but no hard drive boot option is enabled in the UEFI boot order. I followed Agent Pallipurath solution with the exception of opening up the laptop. Just bought this year this year. Laptop was opening up this morning then all of sudden back to this error message.

Hi   @1oh1

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thank you for reaching out, and I am sorry to hear that your HP EliteBook is displaying the "Boot Failure" message unexpectedly, especially when it was working earlier today. I understand dont worry I'll be glad to help.

To better understand the situation, could you kindly share:

  • When you power on the notebook, do you hear the SSD/HDD being detected in BIOS (F10)?
  • Have you run the HP Hardware Diagnostics (F2) storage test? If yes, what was the result?
  • Do you see the drive listed under Storage Information or System Information in BIOS?

In the meantime, kindly try the below steps and confirm :

Step 1: Perform a Hard Reset - Click here for steps

  1. Power off the notebook.
  2. Disconnect the AC adapter and any external devices.
  3. Press and hold the Power button for 15 seconds.
  4. Reconnect the AC adapter and turn on the notebook.

Step 2: Verify Drive Detection in BIOS

  1. Power on the notebook and repeatedly tap F10 to enter BIOS.
  2. Check under System Information or Storage.
  3. Confirm whether the SSD/HDD is listed.

If the drive is not detected in BIOS, that helps narrow down the cause.

Step 3: Run HP Hardware Diagnostics -  Click here for steps

  1. Power off the notebook.
  2. Turn it on and immediately tap F2 repeatedly.
  3. Select Component Tests - Storage.
  4. Run the Quick Test and then the Extensive Test.

Kindly share the test results, including any Failure ID if one appears.

Step 4: Restore BIOS Defaults

  1. Press F10 during startup to enter BIOS.
  2. Select Restore Defaults or Load Setup Defaults.
  3. Save Changes and Exit.

Step 5: Check UEFI Boot Order

  1. Enter BIOS (F10).
  2. Navigate to Boot Options.
  3. Confirm that:
    • UEFI Boot Mode is enabled.
    • OS Boot Manager appears in the boot order and is enabled.
  4. Save and Exit.

I hope this helps.

I'm an HP Employee.
