It is Code that is buried in the BIOS. If your Windows 8/8.1 installation from a clean install does not activate it is because you installed a version different from the OS on the laptop as it shipped. If you install exactly the same version it will activate automatically the first time the computer is connected to the internet. If your laptop came with 8.1 you will get this if you install 8, for example.

Specifications say it came with Windows 8.1 with Bing 64 bit which is the very low-end version of Windows 8.1. The laptop is not that old and the best thing likely is to contact HP and see if they still have the restore disk for it.

I use the following procedure that most times works:

Install win 8 from a media, better if you have a win8.1 media. you have to install the same type of preinstalled win 8, i.e. win 8 (or 8.1) home or win 8 pro. if you have a pavilion possibly it is 'home', if you have a probook it is 'pro'.

when the license key is requested at the beginning of installation choose "I' ll write later" or so.

when win 8 install is completed download the software 'rw everythink' from http://rweverything.com/download/ ; be sure to choose the correct version (32 or 64 bit), and install it.

launch rw everythink, click on ACPI button, than click on MSDM; read your win 8 activation code in 'data', copy and paste it to activate your windows.

good work.
