Hello...Long story short, there has bee malware, trojans, heuristic, and rootkits slowly working there way into my network @ home, almost a year and a half.  This stuff has slipped by my protection Avast Total and also Malware Bytes.  How i realized what was happening all of a sudden was a Samsung Email linked itself to my Gmail.  Once this happened it was down hill from there. whatever and whomever has done this they don't stop no matter what I have tried doing. Other than this HP notebook, which I am using Ubuntu 18.04 because this malware/virus has completely took overt and wiped out all of my devices including a Desktop PC, tablets, and 2 brandnew cell phones. This has been the worst nightmare I have ever dealt with, and this is putting itvery very mildly, I am absolutely dead serious.  I do not wish this on anyone ever!!   But after all of this, I just want to know how I can get a download of my original Windows, if I even can?  Any and every little bit of help right now is more than appreciated T....THANK  You

Hi, @KyBoi79

If your notebook came with W8 from HP,  there is a trick to get W8.1 to install...here is what you need to do...

You can reinstall W8.1 for free on your HP PC by using the W8 product key in the BIOS as follows...

Install W8.1 by creating the Microsoft installation media, using another Windows PC, if yours is not working...You want W8.1 64 bit.

https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/software-download/windows8ISO

If you are asked to enter a product key during the installation process, use this generic key.

This is the generic key for W8.1 'Standard.'

334NH-RXG76-64THK-C7CKG-D3VPT

When you get to the screen that asks 'Where do you want to install Windows,' delete every partition on the hard drive, leaving just one partition of unallocated space. Click Next, and W8.1 should begin to install.

If you had to enter the generic key, manually change the generic product key to the W8 key in your PC's BIOS in the PC settings menu.

After you get W8.1 installed, and you had to manually enter the W8.1 generic product key, you will need to run the free utility I zipped up and attached below, that will show you the W8 product key in your PC's BIOS.

I have also zipped up and attached below, the Microsoft tool which hopefully will transfer the ISO file to a DVD or USB flash drive so it is bootable.

Then you can install the available drivers and software from your PC's support page.

Hi

ShowKeyPlus from the Microsoft Store (probably the best choice).
https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/p/showkeyplus/9pkvzcprx9nv?activetab=pivot:overviewtab

The output is like this....
ShowKeyPlus - Windows Product Key Information

Product Name: Windows 10 Home
Version: 12345.678 (64-bit OS)
Product ID: 00000-00000-00000-AAOEM
Installed Key: 12345-67890-09876-54321
OEM Key: MICRO-SOFTY-WINDO-WSTEN-64BIT
OEM Edition: Win 10 RTM Core OEM:DM

Thank you very much!!!  Just now getting to see this, and hoping this works. I have to try and make bootable usb on Ubuntu 19.10, that is my only resource as of now. I have watched videos from Foss on how to do it. Also, would the 25 character PCID on the bottom of my PC work with activating the Windows 8?  Thank you

You're very welcome.

If your notebook came with W8, the product key that will work is in the BIOS.

Unless the product key you have on the case is for W8, it probably will not work.

Thank you very much as well!!!  I will most definately try out both solutions to see which one will work best..Especially thanks for the bottom links you sent me..

The sticker on the bottom of the PC is one of just Windows 8, it doesn't show anything else other than that. The pcid is embedded along with the serial number, model number, etc...My model is 15-g011nr  serial:CNDXXXXCNB (X=numbers) and then a 25 key PCID

Hi:

The product specs for your notebook indicate that it came with W8.1 from HP, not W8.

https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04329607

That changes what you need to do to reinstall W8.1.

Just download the plain W8.1 64 bit ISO file from the Microsoft link, make the ISO file bootable, and W8.1 will automatically find the product key in the BIOS.

You should not need to enter a product key, and the info I posted would only be if your notebook came with W8, which it didn't.
