Subject: Request for Assistance with Windows 10 Activation After Hardware Upgrade

Dear HP Support Team,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing to request assistance regarding the Windows 10 activation issue on my HP laptop.

Recently, I upgraded my laptop's SSD, and after the hardware upgrade, my Windows 10 Home installation lost its activation status. I have already contacted Microsoft Support, but they informed me that since my Windows license is an OEM/pre-installed license, I should reach out to the device manufacturer for further assistance.

Issue Details

  • Operating System: Windows 10 Home

  • Problem: Windows deactivated after upgrading the SSD

  • Activation Attempts:
I have tried several troubleshooting steps, including the Activation Troubleshooter and the hardware-change reactivation procedures recommended on Microsoft’s support website. Unfortunately, none of these methods restored the activation.

  • Digital License:
My Windows 10 license was originally activated via a Digital License linked to my Microsoft Account. Even after signing in with the correct Microsoft Account, the activation still fails.

  • Additional Note:
My Office 2016 suite, which is also linked to the same account, has reactivated successfully.

Proof of Purchase

I do not have a product key because Windows 10 came pre-installed (OEM license). However, I do have the original tax invoice for the laptop purchase. I am prepared to share the invoice details or provide a copy of the invoice to verify ownership of the device and the genuine Windows license.

Request

I kindly request your assistance in reactivating my Windows 10 Home license.
Please advise me on the next steps, such as:

  • Whether manual or phone activation can be performed, or

  • If the case can be escalated to a support agent who can verify the license using my proof of purchase.

Thank you very much for your time and support. I look forward to your prompt assistance.

Warm regards,

Hi @bhaudya

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it must be to lose activation after upgrading your SSD, especially when you’ve already tried the Microsoft Activation Troubleshooter and hardware‑change reactivation steps.

Thank you for the effort you’ve put in—it helps us focus on the right path forward. Let’s go through the steps you can try to restore activation on your HP laptop:

Step‑by‑step actions

Confirm Windows is up to date

  • Go to Settings → Update & Security → Windows Update → Check for updates.
  • Install all pending updates, then restart the laptop.

Run Activation Troubleshooter again

  • Settings → Update & Security → Activation → Troubleshoot.
  • Sign in with the Microsoft Account linked to your digital license.

Use the “I changed hardware on this device” option

  • In the Activation Troubleshooter, select “I changed hardware on this device recently.”
  • Choose your HP laptop from the list of devices associated with your account.

Manual activation via command

  • Press Windows + X → Command Prompt (Admin).
  • Type: slmgr /ato and press Enter.
  • This forces Windows to attempt online activation.

Phone activation

  • Press Windows + R → type slui 4 → Enter.
  • Select your country (India) and call the toll‑free number displayed.
  • Follow the automated instructions to complete activation.

Verify OEM license

  • Since your license is OEM, it is tied to the device’s motherboard.
  • Upgrading the SSD should not remove activation, but if the digital license is not re‑linking, proof of purchase may be required. Keep your invoice ready.

If activation still fails after these steps, the most reliable method is phone activation (slui 4), as it allows verification of your OEM license directly with Microsoft using your HP device details.
